So in the Two Towers, we all know that Merry and Pippin are captured by Uruk-hai, who are joined by orcs, who later camp by Fangorn. And they start complaining about being hungry and how they've only have "maggoty bread for three stinkin days". They want to eat the hobbits, but the Uruks say they can't be soiled. So what happens? An orc gets beheaded. And the Uruk who does the beheading announces "Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!"

What I can't help but wonder is, the Uruks and Orcs know what a menu is! Menus come from restaurants and food services. Does that mean there's a McDoom near Mount Doom? (<meant as a joke there). I don't recall if they said anything like this in the books, though, but I find it interesting the choice of wording for the movie. Uruks knew what menus are, so the Uruks have a place where they can look at menus (must be pictures, because I don't see them caring to learn how to read).

Oh wait, these Uruks are from Saruman. So then it must be a Burger Wizard they got their menus from. Or maybe a White Lobster? (White Hand, Red Lobster.... I know, my puns aren't very punny).

Haha very witty! It's a good point as well, and it does suggest that orcs and uruks have more sophisticated lifestyle than I initially thought.

The history is quite interesting, Chinese market holders invented the menu around 900 years ago to let their customers know what they were selling, so it's not a modern invention from restaurants. Maybe orcs have an equivalent, especially as Tolkien envisioned them being more eastern than Hobbits :). And the word menu was invented in the eighteenth century, which is a similar period to the inspiration for Hobbit lifestyle. :P

Lol I like the sound of a MicDoom.... heck I'd eat there! :P

Haha... Lembas, the first thing I did was went and looked up the history.

It is an interesting choice of words, though. Never thought of it but yes... a menu is a list of food options. Very interesting indeed.

Of course! Saruman likes to offer a choice of flavoursome healthy meals for his workers. Although the menu is mostly meat it also offers a vegetarian and gluten free option for those with gentle stomachs. He tried to interest them in some lembas bread but they seem to dislike it.

Lol, I am sure sushi was a big hit... though most orcs probably don't make enough to buy that often. :P

I have often wondered what type of society did the orcs and goblins live in?

They are presented as beasts (and rightly so) and thus never given any identity within a culture.

Even though the line 'Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!' was purely manufactured by the screenplay writers, there is a possibility that orcs had a bit more to them than usually portrayed. Take Shagrat and Gorbag.... they were going to 'set up somewhere on their own' in the books. In the movie they just argue and try and kill each other and start the big fight at Minas Morgul.

My question is.. what sort of bread was it that it had maggots in it? Maggots usually infest dead meat. Maybe they mistook the mealworms as maggots?

I like the idea of orcs having a bit more to them than mindless minions only wanting to kill. An RP made up of orcs might actually be kind of fun! Perhaps slightly disgusting, but fun!

Hanasian, with movie orcs, everything is a maggot. The bread could have just been a little moldy and they still would have called it maggoty. The thing is, since they all call each other maggots and yet are still the same species, that means that half of them are all flies. Good analogy actually, considering the two lifespans. :p

Haha, an orc RP would certainly be a new one for me but it could be interesting for sure.

I always, I guess because of the maggots, immagined orcs having a bread that has meat in it actually.... like a meat loaf only with real bread mixed in. I have heard of recipes that people use that actually use meat in bread recipes. That might be where I came up with the idea but yes.... maggots in normal bread is unusual unless the bread is moist and gets soggy.

I wonder.... what would orc life be like if Sauron was not in the picture? What would they do for jobs? Raise livestock? *shrugs* I mean it would make sense that they are not just ALWAYS bent on killing and fighting. Something of their former selves possibly left over?

I went to a Tolkien-themed luncheon and someone brought 'maggoty bread' ... a dark rye bread with gummy worms baked in them. Was quite lovely for a slice, but after three days.... hobbit-burger would be quite nice.

Haha, now that's creative! lol

I would love to have a Tolkien themed luncheon... if only I had more time on my hands and knew more people in real life who liked LOTR.

I’ll venture a wild guess: because their social skills are seriously underdeveloped? :fish:

One of the ways we get to show off our muscles to all of our new friends that we have made across the world is by playing video games online at poppy playtime . It's possible to develop an addiction to it, and I think parents have a big duty to prevent this from happening.
