hey, been doing some sourcing about how elves get married,do they have somesort of ceremony of w/e so i found out from wiki the entire story!!
Spouses can choose each other even long before they are married, thus becoming betrothed. The betrothal is subject to parental approval unless the parties are of age and intend to marry soon, at which point the betrothal is announced at a meeting of the two houses. They exchange rings and the betrothal lasts at least a year, and is revocable by the return of the rings; however, it is rarely broken. After their formal betrothal, the couple appoints a time for the wedding at least a year after the betrothal.
Marriage is celebrated at a feast of the two houses. They give back their betrothal rings and receive others worn on their index fingers. The bride’s mother gives the groom a jewel to be worn, but the marriage is achieved with its consummation. Technically, only the words exchanged by the bride and groom (including the speaking of the name of Eru) and the consummation are required for marriage.

Cool, thanks, I wasn't quite sure about that... But I have a question, what about if an elf were to marry a human? I've read the Scribe's version, but...

Hmm..
if the groom is a human than probably they would go through human customs and if the groom is an elf then they would follow his..just a deduction..

Well, that explains why the Elessar was given to Aragorn, but I wonder if this was the way Aragorn and Arwen got married. Interesting though.

Was there a further source listed? I tend to be suspicious unless something is actually written in one of Tolkien's books or letters. Does anyone know where that was written?

It's prudent to be wary of Wiki-quotes, but this much (above) is basically a paraphrase from part of Tolkien's [deep breath]... "OF THE LAWS AND CUSTOMS AMONG THE ELDAR PERTAINING TO MARRIAGE AND OTHER MATTERS RELATED THERETO: TOGETHER WITH THE STATUTE OF FINWE AND MIRIEL AND THE DEBATE OF THE VALAR AT ITS MAKING"I'm not shouting... it's written like that in the book, Morgoth's Ring Somewhat stunningly perhaps (given my experience anyway), the above Wiki-description is rather good, if not as detailed as the text itself (not surprisingly), and I'll add the small detail that the slender rings of gold were worn upon the index finger of the right hand (the hand is not mentioned above, and the betrothal rings were silver), and that the custom of jewel giving begins with a new paragraph, starting with: "Among the Noldor also it was a custom that the bride's mother..."But anyway... that's the source... I know you've been wondering for years
