Kano looked around as a motion was given in his direction to come forward. He could not hear all that was said but with a second motion he realized they were indeed beckoning to him to approach. The crowds parted and he brushed off the feeling of nervousness as he nudged Sage into a walk with a gentle tap of his foot against the horse's side.

Kano bowed in respect to the King, then gave a glance towards the strange women who held her hand near his leg. She seemed elvish but he wasn't sure. He couldn't say he had ever seen an elf before to know exactly what they looked like.

"The wounds are deep," the women told him softly, keeping her voice under the continued discussion between Dunham and the King. "Come see me later. There may yet be something to be done for your wounds."

"Thank you m'lady," Kano whispered with a respectful nod.

He looked up with a grin as Dunham mention him and Athilda were to be wed. This came as little of a surprise to him but he was happy for them both. As the King rightly said... for two to find such fortune in the midst of such calamity was a sweet thing indeed.

As the discussion wound down Eomer stepped forwards, looking over the black war horse with a keen eye.

"That's a fine steed you have there," he said, looking up at Kano.

Kano dipped his head and replied. "Thank you, sir. It was... a gift. I'm afraid it's owner gave his life defending this keep before the wall was breached. A friend of the previous owner offered to let me ride it out in the final charge as I was willing to fight. After our victory he insisted I keep Sage, him having a need for someone to care for him."

Athilda glanced down in embarassment as Dunhama spoke of her duties as a nurse. Her feelings of guilt and embarassment deepened a blush that rose to her cheeks as the King addressed her, but as he spoke, she met his eyes and blinked.
As she looked into her Kings' eyes, she saw a deep love and care for his people, and she knew that her accusation of him was wrong. She sighed softly and squeezed Dunhamas hand, then curtsied to the King again and spoke in a soft voice as he stepped towards her.
"Forgive me, my King, but I...I have but one request....I was charged to care for a Dunlanding, but....due to an incident, he is now in the prison camp, and I fear that his life is in danger."
She glanced up at the Commander as he cleared his throat, then glanced back at the King, who was still listening.
"Your Highness, may I request that this man-Wuglov is his name-be escorted here to the keep. I need to see to his wounds, and any others he may have."

Erkenbrand took a deep breath as he leaned to the King. He said in a whisper.

”This man she speaks of Has been useful to me, and he also helped Lady Athilda when she was attacked, but earlier this day he attacked and nearly killed my adjutant Beregil.”

The king nodded and looked at Lady Athilda. He said after a pause,

”It is apparent this man Wulgov is dear to you Lady Athilda? I will have him found and brought here this night per your request. I will also have two guards with him at all times.”

The commander gave orders and some guards left straight away. The king gave Kan a nod and Eomer turned and said loudly to everyone gathered,

Should this young man recover well enough from his wounds, I would ask him to train to ride with my riders of the Mark. We had suffered much losses in the battles of Isen and Hornburg, and will need as many young riders as we can find. All who wish to join and have a horse, we gather in the training grounds ere the third hour of the morning.”

Theoden nodded his approval of Eomer’s words, and he said loudly,

”My people! With the help of unseen allies, we have been victorious! The trees of Fangorn rose against Isengard and Saruman has perished! In victory we will celebrate, but not yet, for we must return to Edoras. We gather in the morning and set out ere noon. The road will be safe and we can travel freely. Until then we have much to do. This night, rest and prepare.”

Theoden gave a wave, and he and the travellers with Eomer and Lady Eowyn went to a high chamber, and the people started to disperse to ready themselves for the journey tomorrow.

Athilda opened her mouth to protest the Kings' words on how she felt towards Wuglov, but she quickly decided not to. It was not her place to protest when she had so boldly asked for the safe passage of an enemy and traitor in the first place. Instead, Athilda dipped her head and uttered a quiet thanks to her king as the commander spoke to his guards.
Her eyes met Kanos' and she smiled as Eomer spoke of him and his need for more riders. Then she glanced back to the king as he addressed the crowd. She smiled and lifted her hand and placed it over her heart at the news. They truly were victorious! Perhaps the need for ordinary men would end, then she and Dunhama could live out their days in peace.
As the King and his company waved and left, Athilda dipped her head, then turned to face Dunhama with a new spark of hope twinkling in her eye.
"Dunhama, we are going home!"
She couldn't help but smile as she gazed into his eyes, for once they made it to Meduseld they would marry.

Kano glanced to the King as Eomer spoke and felt a sense of accomplishment as the King agreed with Eomer's proposal. He had not yet accomplished joining but it seemed hopeful at least now.

Shortly after the King and those with him left and the common people slowly started dispersing and going their own ways. Likely to take the advice of their King. Rest and preparation seemed like wise council at this point.

Kano road over beside Dunham and Athilda. "Seems as though congratulations are in order." He smiled as he looked down towards them. "I am glad for you both... but pardon my asking... this Dunlanding you ask for. What is he to you?"

Yes! They were going home! And there in Edoras he will marry Athilda, and will be the happiest man in the realm! He gave athilda a light kiss on the cheek before turning to Kan and answering him.

”I believe he is the brother of my father. I think he has told Athilda as much.”

Dunhama looked at Athilda as she looked down at her hands. Dunhama then said,

”I have yet to talk to him myself, but I have many questions for him.”

It was the only thought that was taking the joy out of this night, but he wrested it away and smiled. He was torn between going off to prepare, or wait on the wall of the keep and watch for the arrival of Wulgov.

Athilda turned as Kano addressed them and she was about to answer him when Dunhama did it for her. She glanced down at her hands as thoughts of this man-this Dunlanding-haunted her mind. The thoughts and feelings which plagued her heart and mind were interrupted as Dunhama took her hands in his and squeezed them gently.
Her eyes met his for a brief moment before the smile returned to her face.
"The time will come for questioning, but for now, let's enjoy the good news by celebrating with a bowl of stew. Kano, would you like to accompany us?"
She looked back up at Kano.

Dunhama nodded and said,

"Yes! Stew! I am rather hungry. Come Kan, let's go eat!"

He held Athilda's hand as she started to lead the way.

Kano gave a questioning look at Dunham's answer, for he had not yet heard of all the comotion surrounding Dunham and his Dunlanding ancestry. He said nothing at the time but gladly accepted the offer to join them for a meal.

He road slowly along beside them until they reached the inner parts of the fortress where his horse could not go. He had a short set of canes tied to the pack on Sage.

"I appologize," he said. "It takes me some time to get on and off." Slowly he slid off, holding his weight with his arms that grasped the saddle on Sage. He fumbled about a bit to grab the double canes and then made an awkward switch from his horse to the canes. He slowly made his way to a place to tie his horse.

After they made the slow walk to the dinning area and all got a bowl of stew. After they were seated Kano looked over to Dunham. "I did not realize you were from Enedwaith... my family hails from a settlement near the river Glanduin." He glanced around, seeming slightly nervous and he spoke in hushed tones. "My parents were members of the wildmen who went out attacking villages... when I told you I lost my parents in an attack by wildmen... I failed to mention which side my parents were on. They did die in the attack, but they were part of the attack. They had forced me to join in the attack. They said I was old enough to fight." He looked down at his bowl and fidgeted with his spoon in his stew. "I... I ran. Once the battle started. I wanted no part of their life. I had made it to Edoras just days before we came here to Helms deep."

Athilda took Dunhamas hand as the three of them walked down the hall in silence. After Kano had gotten down, the three of them sat down and began to slowly eat a hearty bowl of stew. Athilda looked up at Kano as he began to reveal his story to Dunhama.
She was speechless. How could his parents engage in such attacks towards the innocent? And how could any parent force their child to take part alongside them? It was madness. Athilda glanced down at the grain in the wood as Kano fidgeted with his soup, then she looked into his eyes as she laid a hand comfortingly on his hand.
"Kano, we are glad that you are with us now. Perhaps this was designed to happen, for now you can begin a new life in King Theoden's army."
She smiled reassuringly, then drew back her hand and placed it in her lap, then as Dunhama spoke, she began to eat her meal.

Dunhama nodded in agreement with Athilda's words. He then said as she finished,

"It appears we have similar roots in Enedwaith. I am sorry you got involved in the raiding. You did right to come to Edoras, as did my mother."

He took a couple bites of the hearty stew and thought. He looked at Athilda and caught her eyes when she turned from her bowl. Dunhama asked her,

"Should I ask him?"

Athilda looked at him questioningly. Dunhama leaned into her hair and whispered,

"Should I ask Kan to stand with us as our friend at our wedding?"

Athilda smiled and nodded, and Dunhama asked Kan,

"We would like for you to stand with us at our wedding, for you are really the only family either of us have."

He looked back at Athilda and smiled.

Athilda smiled at Dunhama as he asked Kano to stand next to them on their wedding day. She couldn't help but fall deeper in love with Dunhama, for although there were many qualities she loved about him, his compassion for others' was the one characteristic about him she loved the most.
Taking his hand in hers, Athilda looked at the shocked face of their friend and smiled.
"Will you, Kano? You have been through so much, and you deserve a place of honor."

Kano was relieved to know they both were accepting of his past. He had feared for a moment they would harbor some sort of ill towards him. Then, he was taken aback.

"Me? Stand in at your wedding?" he was clearly surprised by the request. "I would be honored." He dipped his head in a subtle nod. "It would be an honor indeed. Thank you."

Dunhama smiled and said as he looked at Athilda briefly before looking back to Kano. He said,

"No sir, it is our honour that you will do this for us!"

Dunhama squeezed Athilda's hand before letting it go to take his bowl to tip it. He dragged the wooden spoon around and took the last bite of stew before setting the bowl down. He noticed Kano grimace in pain for a moment, so he asked both Athilda and Kano,

"Do you think that elf woman could help you heal?"

~ ~ ~

When the guards got to the Dunlanding camp. They found Wulgov sitting there with blood on him. Around him lay four men dead. The sharp branch still in his hand. He stared straight out to the rest of the Dunlandings, not able to go to sleep, for he would surely die. When the guard addressed him, he did not respond. It was not until the guard touched his shoulder that he jumped into a defensive stance.

"Easy. If it were up to me, I'd run you through for attacking Beregil. But you seem to have friends in high places. Lady Eowyn's handmaiden asked the King to intervene on your behalf. Now, you can come peacefully with us now, or we turn around and say you refused the grace of the King."

Wulgov blinked, unsure what he had just heard. The Lady Athilda spoke to the King on his behalf? Realizing that his fortunes have changed from possibly not living beyond falling asleep, to possibly seeing the Lady Athilda again, he nodded and threw away the branch, and a guard came to each of his side. They walked out into the night toward the keep...

Kano shrugged as Dumham's question. He didn't want to get his hopes up. "I don't know... the other healers say I may one day be able to get around... hobble around, without the canes. They said I would never walk normaly again, though. I know nothing if this other healer. I was going togo see her after we finished up here."

Kano still dabbled in his bowl of stew. It wasn't that the stew was bad. His mind was simply elsewhere.

Athilda smiled and glanced over to Dunhama as he squeezed her hand, then she took her last bite of stew and set the spoon and bowl aside as Kano answered Dunhama.
She waited a few moments to speak, for she noticed that something was on his mind. Perhaps it was his wounds or his background that bothered his mind. After waiting a few minutes, Athilda looked back to Dunhama.
I believe it is a possibility, for she had completely healed the man who the Dunlanding had harmed, and his wounds were fatal. I'm sure that she would be able to heal your legs, Kano, if you asked."
She smiled at Kano then glanced up at a maid who stopped by their table.
"I beg your pardon, but I was sent here to tell you that the prisoner is about to arrive. He will be sent to the Commanders' office."
Athilda nodded and thanked the maid, then she stared at the center of the table for a few moments before a hand on her back brought her out of her thoughts.
"Forgive me, I...was lost in my thoughts."
She glanced up at Dunhama then took his hand and stood up. She then looked at Kano and smiled.
"Thank you, Kano for being a friend to us. We cannot wait to have you standing with us as we wed."
She sighed then dipped her head.
"If you'll excuse us. We shouldn't be gone very long...but if we are, goodnight, my friend."
She then waited for Dunhama to say goodbye, then took her bowl and handed it to the kitchen staff before walking out into the hall.
