I just checked the German Wikipedia, and it appears Robert Foster’s “Complete Guide to Middle-earth” was translated into German in 2012. Looks very much like taking advantage of the renewed JRRT craze here in Germany when the first Hobbit movie came out. Tyler draws a blank in the German Wikipedia.
As I believe I have posted elsewhere, Schneidewind goes off on what I call tangents every once in a while. While they might make sense to some Germans (and confuse others), there is the danger that his tangents would utterly confuse many English-speakers. Some might find these things amusing as a curiosity, even decidedly oddball. He also tends towards speculation which would probably raise the hackles on Christopher Tolkien’s neck. What he definitely is, though, is thorough: on the deep trivia scale I have the feeling that he even tops Foster and Tyler, combined no less.
What puzzles me (I have a link to Schneidewind’s homepage) is that the December 2016 revised edition, in hardback, is given as 806 pages. My 2001 paperback (but at 23.5 by 16.5 centimeters anything but a pocketbook!) has 829 pages – and does include the names of at least some actors and others (known to be) involved in the LoTR movies. With six movies (plus EEs for each) and at least seven new books – five by Christopher Tolkien, two by Verlyn Flieger – to contend with, how does this work out?
Speculation: larger format approaching “coffee table” (but at “only” 24.90 Euros?), smaller script in the hardcover (but then does it come with a magnifying glass?), ???
There is one hint on Schneidewind’s homepage, in that the 2001 original version (17th edition) is still available. So perhaps (maybe I should just visit my favorite bookstore and buy / order the 2016 version, and then read it???) this is rather a companion lexicon to the 2001 version. Concentrating on the movies and the books which were sources for them (which in case of The Hobbit far exceed the 1937 book itself). Overlap in the characters and places common to both books and movies, probably discussions about the differences between them, background of all sorts about the movies. And entries about the new books, as Schneidewind’s is a Tolkien lexicon, not just a LoTR lexicon. Hammond and Scull have published both, a LoTR Reader’s Companion in one volume, and a J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide in two volumes. Are they also going to update?

Looking forward to using my 6 meter long branch lopper. Was going to use it Sunday but I was ill and didn't do much.

I'm not fond of sauces, gravies and their ilk; or, more properly, I hate it when food is "swimming" in sauces, gravies and their ilk.

I'm rather fond of sauces, though in moderation. I also hate it when the food is drowned in a sauce. I do like gravy if it isn't too salty, but don't drown my food in it. I like my sub sandwiches, but I had to start getting them from the Subways around here without sauce, because Aussies don't understand the concept of 'light on the sauce'. Besides, they don't offer a light olive oil and red wine vinegar anyway, so I make up my own at home. I sure miss the Sub Shop #8 in my hometown! I do love my salsa & corn chips!

I ordered that new German Tolkien Encyclopedia I mentioned earlier last Thursday, but shopping on Friday and yesterday fell victim to health issues, so I’ll pick it up tomorrow.

My planned trip to the Mainland has been put on hold as I have to deal with a bad knee. My last remaining Uncle and I were planning a trip around the Province but have decided to scotch it until spring. There are too many forest fires right now and they won't die down until the rainy season which will be upon us shortly.

Finally got around to getting some things including shopping done yesterday, including picking up that new German Tolkien Lexicon, and have been browsing it since – especially the digression parts.

We've got smoke particulate in the air again. This time it's from the forest fires in Washington State. With all the coverage of the hurricanes, the forest fire situation in the US, the worst in history, seems to have been overlooked.

Yes, that 'Jolly Mountain' fire is rampaging all through my old stomping grounds of the 1990's. I lived a bit south and west from where the fires are, and Lake Cle Elum is sort of in the way between ridges, but Roslyn and Cle Elum where I did most of my business have been on Level 3 with the fires just over the ridge. Been keeping tabs on it through the Kittitas County Fire District website.
And I see some dumb@ss teenager was lighting firecrackers while hiking by Multnomah Falls and set the woods on fire. Hoping that lodge doesn't burn down.
