As the sun began to grow and the east horizon brightened Kano still held Gaelrin in his arms. It seemed like an eternity they stood there, yet all in all not nearly long enough for Kano. At long last the young women pulled away slowly and spoke.

Kano smiled at her words and said softly. "I am afraid I can not forgive you, Gaelrin. For that would require you to have done something that needs forgiveness... And you have not."

He looked at her red cheeks, dry tear streams still evident. She shivered from the cold. The winds had.picked up and a chill was in the air. Then she spoke yet again and Kano felt his heart quicken. Would he stay with her?

"Would I... Stay with you?" He whispered, looking deep into her eyes. He leaned closer and let his lips fall on hers for a short moment. "Always, and forever."

Gaelrin's heart felt like bursting, and for the first time since Helm's Deep, the feeling wasn't from sorrow, but rather, from joy and comfort. She didn't know how long she had stayed in his embrace, but she didn't care....if he were to hold her for all eternity, that would be heaven.
She felt goosebumps rise on her arms and her ankles began to throb slightly, but as he gazed into her eyes, all of that went away. As he kissed her, her heart raced and a small smile rose to her lips at his response.
Yes, she would be more than happy to stay with him forever. But the hours were drawing to a close and exhaustion began to set in until it wore her eyelids down.
"Would you accompany me back to the tent to get some rest?"

Kano nodded as Gaelrin made her request. He had little more than a thin shirt on with a leather vest over top, but he took his best off and wrapped it around Gaelrin. Then, with a careful but swift motion he picked her up in his arms. "I hope you don't mind," he said with a smile. He knew by now her ankle would be throbbing. She had pushed herself hard during their training and done well.

The walk was slow, and his steps were uneven, but he started down the path towards the tents.

Hilgon and his companion were stopped by the first guard who escorted them toward toward the Great Hall. They came upon a young couple that looked like they had been awake all night. They were carrying swords, and the young man was carrying the young lady. The guard said,

”Make way for the Messenger of Gondor!”

They moved out of the path and watched them ride by. After they passed, Grihias was walking up the path rubbing his eyes. He said to Gaelrin and Kano as he approached them,

”I awoke and you were not there Gaelrin, so I came looking for you. I looked for Kano’s tent, thinking you were there, then I saw you two up here. What do you think this messenger is all about?”

Grihias watched as the riders dismounted and hurried inside the Gread Hall of Meduseld to see King Theoden.

Dunhama awoke and sat up. Athilda remained sound asleep beside him, so he stood and went to the window. The sun was rising in the east and lighting Starkhorn peak in orange, The clouds seemed to dissipate as they blew down toward Edoras. He donned his breeches and a light undertunic and quietly stepped outside the door. The air was fresh and crisp with the mountain breeze. He looked up the ridge that was behind the wall of the city when someone said,

”Good morning young master!”

He turned and an elderly man with a walking stick stood in front of the bungalow next to theirs. The old man went on,

”Was hoping to meet the new neighbours. We haven’t heard that much … activity… there in well, a very long time.”

Dunhama blushed and stammered,

”Well met kind sir. My apologies if we… disturbed you.”

“No, not at all, it was invigorating to hear young love”

The elderly man said, It was then Dunhama noticed he had a basket over his shoulder. He walked up to Dunhama and asked,

”Have you and your wife thought of what you would have for breakfast?”

Dunhama again blushed and mumbled,

”Um… well, no.”

The man unslung the basket and handed it to Dunhama and said,

”My wife guessed as much, and thought you two would have worked up quite the appetite, so she cooked a double portion of breakfast. Give our regards to your wife good sir!”

Dunhama smelled the warm food as the old man turned and walked away. Dunhama finally said,

”I will! Thank you much!”

He turned and went back in setting the basket by the table. He opened it and a waft of freshly cooked eggs and bacon and fresh bread filled the room. Athilda lazily awoke as she smelled the food.

(OOC: Ok, I definitely thought that the old man with the walking stick was Gandalf....and I may have gotten really excited. But this was cute. ^^)
Gaelrin shivered as the cool morning air whipped about them, and before she knew it, Kano had wrapped his vest around her and had picked her up. A warm smile lifted her lips and she looked up at him and knew just by looking at him that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him.
Just as she opened her mouth to respond, a loud command was given behind them, and when Kano stepped out of the way, a cloud seemed to form over them. Something was wrong. Why would a messenger of Gondor travel all the way out here?
"Grihias, where have you-" she started to say before softening her tone at his quick account.
"I'm sorry. I...I should have told you where I was. I...I don't know. But I fear that nothing good will come of his arrival."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Athilda turned over onto her side as she felt the bed shift, and not a few moments later, the warm, savory aroma of breakfast filled her nose, causing her to rouse.
When she opened her eyes, she was stunned to see a full breakfast being laid out on the table.
"Dunhama, did you...?"
She asked as she swung her legs over the side and wrapped the blanket around her small frame.

Kano stepped asside as the messenger went past and then looked to Grihias as he spoke. He set Gaelrin down as they paused there to speak with Gihias. His face had an ill look about it as the lad inquired about the messenger and his eyes trailed on after the Gondorian. “Aye,” Kano agreed with Gaelrin. “Nothing good indeed.” He seemed lost for a moment, off in another world. He snapped too and looked back towards his two compainions. “Why don’t I help you back to your tent, Gaelrin,” he suggested. “Then I will go get some breakfast for the three of us. I believe they still have food in the great hall for those in need. Perhaps I will hear talk of what tidings this messenger brings.” He looked to Gaelrin and Grihias. “Unless you two would rather go to the hall with me.”

Gaelrin let her hands drop from around Kano's neck but cringed as her feet met the soft earth. Even with the momentary relapse, her ankles continued to throb. She flicked her eyes up to Kano at his suggestion of taking her to the tent and leaving them.
"No. I'm coming with you. Perhaps what we hear will give us insight in how to prepare..."
Her gaze dropped to her brother and she placed a gentle arm around his shoulders and squeezed him, then released her arm before tears started to fall down her face.
"Stay here Grihias. Why don't you go and make your bed and collect some wood for the fire?"

Kano nodded, offering Gaelrin his hand. “Can you walk? I can cary you the rest of the way if you like.”

He glanced to Grihias, wondering if the boy would listen to his sister. He knew young boys were good at not listening. Either way, he wanted to know what this messenger brought. It no doubt would impact them all.

Gaelrin shook her head and muttered a quiet no; but in all honesty, she did want him to carry her, not just for the relief of her feet, but...just to be held by him.
"The walking will do my feet good, I think."
She flashed a fake smile at him before turning to her brother.
"Will you be alright if I go with him?"

Grihias looked at the ground and kicked a small rock with his boot. He said as he looked at Kano, then Gaelrin.

”Sure sis, go. I will be fine on my own.”

He gave his sister’s hand a squeeze and turned to go back to their tent. Though he felt a bit unwanted, he could not deny that his sister was happy being with Kano. He knew he would have to get used to this, but to do what his sister tells him to do … he kicked stones out of the path as he walked down to the tent, turning once to see Gaelrin had already forgotten about him and was fawning all over Kano as they made their way to the doors of the Great Hall. He mumbled to himself as he walked back to the tent … ”make my bed… get firewood… she tried to say it just like their mother did…” He went in to the tent and sat on his bedroll and stared out at the mountains. Mother was dead and buried in the Westfold, and father was dead and buried in the Deeping-coombe. They were gone, and he and Gaelrin were wards of the King. What that meant exactly Grihias did not know, but it had to mean more than being his sister’s errand bow. If she completely depended on him, he would stay and do what was needed for her, but with Kano here, he didn’t need to. She had him. He was on his own.

Rummaging around in Gaelrin’s belongings, he found a small silver brooch among other adorned chains and amulets she had been gifted with over the years. He was going to have to borrow this. He rolled up his bedroll, and collected his small knife and sword, and changed out of his dress uniform and put on his brown linen breches and a tunic that was still a bit large for him. With some tucking and adjustments to his belt, he put his few things in a satchel and slung it and his bedroll over his shoulder. His bad was made, and now for the firewood. A man came by carrying a bundle of kindling and a few logs, and Grihias stepped out and said,

”Trade you this for your wood.”

The man paused and laughed at the boy as he went to pass it by, but paused to look at the silver brooch in Grihias’ hand. The man said,

”Who did you steal that from kid?”

“My sister. She told me to get firewood, so I’m doing it. She is buying.”

The man sat down the bundle of kindling and took the brooch and looked at it.

”All right, I’ll take it. It isn’t hard to get wood you know.”

Grihias nodded and took the wood and stowed it in the tent. He would have needed to make two trips to get that much. He gave the man a smile as he turned to go get himself more wood. Grihias watched as he pocketed the brooch. He would have to get that back somehow, but he would be concerned with that later. Now, he was going to go for a hike. First stop would be the hall to see what food they have left from the day before, then to that tavern. He set out on the road, and as luck would have it, he saw something shiny in the dirt. He picked it up and saw that it was Gaelrin’s brooch. The man must have had a hole in his pocket! He quickly turned and went back to the tent and stowed it away back in his sister’s bag. She will never know!

Grihias walked to the back door of the kitchen, and he found some day old bread, a pouch of butter, and a small jar of jam that was only half eaten. He stowed it in his satchel and set off to the well to fill his waterbag. He had his sights on the high hills that were just to the east of the city.

Dunhama smiled as he looked over at Athilda.

”I did.”

His eyebrow went up as hers went down in puzzlement before she turned her eyes to the table. Dunhama laughed slightly and said,

”Oh, this… it was a welcoming gift from the neighbors. They somehow knew we had come to occupy this abode.”

He stepped over to Athilda and took her hands into his and she stood before him. He kissed her and said,

”Breakfast m’lady? We have fresh bread, butter, cheese eggs, sausage, tomato, and bacon. He said from what he could tell, we had worked up quite a hearty appetite.”

Dunhama blushed slightly as he said that, and pulled a chair out for Athilda to sit in. Dunhama sat down and took a piece of bacon and nibbled it. He smiled as he looked at his wife and said,

”Maybe after we eat, we could take a walk, a hike as it may be, up to the high country just to our east? We can get away from Edoras and just breathe and spend time together?”

He picked up some bread and slid some butter over it and stuffed it in his mouth and said no more. The food was delicious, and his wife beautiful.

As Kano and Gaelrin headed to the hall Kano’s mind filled with possabilities of what this messenger may bring todings of. Would they be heading off to war already? It seemed the most likely option. He feared for Gaelrin accompanying him. She had such little time to practice... and to heal.

As they walked Kano leaned closer to Gaelrin and whispered. “You seem a poor faker,” he told her. “I could have carried you. Believe me, you won’t hear any objections from me.”

Athilda's heart raced as she gazed into her husbands' eyes, so much so that she couldn't help but smile. She broke her steady gaze on him to serve herself some food, and as she took a bite of the eggs and chewed, she nodded at his suggestion.
"Aye, I would like that very much. Perhaps I could pick some wildflowers for that empty vase on the table. I think it would add a little more color into the room."
She glanced outside the window as a brisk wind blew past them, and noticed something up on the hill by the Great Hall, but she quickly dismissed it, and looked back at Dunhama and blushed as she realized something.
"You know, I....I didn't bring any other...change of clothes with me. I do have my wedding dress though..."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once they made it to the top of the hill, Gaelrin stopped and balled her hands into fists as she fought back the throbbing pain in her ankles. Her focus was shattered as Kano spoke.
"Well, perhaps I will let you carry me down if you'd like."

“I would,” Kano said simply. “I feel too presumptuous to say so... but...” he looked over to her, noting her reaction and seeing her limp seemed to get worse. “Are you sure you are alright?”

Gaelrin released her clenched fist and tried to appear as if the pain was nothing to her, but when she spoke her voice trembled slightly, revealing the pain she was in.
"Of course, I'm alright...why wouldn't I be?"
She shifted on her feet and almost immediately shut her eyes and cringed in pain, but before Kano could say anything, she held up her hand and released a breath.
"Really, I'm okay....I..." Her voice faded as her brows furrowed together.
"I need to get used to it anyways..."

Inside Meduseld, Railan paused after serving the King and his guests some food. She heard Hama the Door Warden refusing to let the men pass, but the King heard the pleas of the man and said,

”Let them come in.”

The messengers from Gondor stepped in and the proud man with grey eyes and a fine dark green cloak covering fine armour bowed down before the King and went to one knee, he said,

”Hail Lord of the Rohirrim, friend of Gondor! Hirgon I am, messenger for the Steward Denethor. We have ridden hard unceasing from Minas Tirith to bring you this token of war. Gondor is in great need. Often the Rohirrim have aided us, but now the Lord Denethor askes for all your strength and all your speed, lest Gondor fall at last!”
He held up in his hands a single arrow, black feathered and barbed in black steel. But the tip was painted a bright crimson, as if it had blood on it.

”The Red Arrow!”

King Theoden said as he lifted it from Hirgon’s hands. He looked solemnly at it as his hands trembled. He said,

”This token of aid has not been seen in the Mark in all my years! Has it indeed come to that?”

Hirgon looked down at Theoden’s feet and said,

"Alas, yes. What reply do I bring back to Minas Tirith, Lord of Rohan?”

Theoden turned slowly to look at those who had gathered around. The faces were solemn and still. Theoden turned back to Hirgon and had him arise to his feet. He said,

”And what does Lord Denethor reckon that all my strength and all my speed be?”

“That is best known to yourself, lord. But alas, the hour is at hand. With the blackness of the east march the armies of Mordor. It will soon come to pass that Minas Tirith is surrounded, and unless you have strength to break a siege of many powers, the Lord Denethor bids me to say that he judges the strong arms of the Rohirrim would be better within his was than without.”

Hirgon bowed his head as the King thought. He then said,

”Lord Denethor knows we fight rather upon horseback in the open fields, and that we are a scattered people from wide lands. Time is needed for the gathering of our Riders. Yet we have beenat war, and we have only now come from the victory over Saruman’s armies. Our losses were many, yet I call today for weapon-take of the peoples, and word has already gone out to our lands to muster in our Hold in Dunharrow.I fear Lord Denethor knows more than he set to word to Rohan.”

With a nod to Grimbold, he set out to spread word. Theoden turned back to Hirgon and said,

”You tell Lord Denethor that I myself will ride to the battlefield before Minas Tirith. In a week’s time, I will arrive with at least six thousand spears and strength enough in them to fight long and hard. Even if victory comes, I fear few will return again to this land.”

Hirgon bowed, and Theoden said to Hama,

”See that Hirgon and his second have fresh steeds to hasten word back to Minas Tirith. Your horses will rest, and will return to you whence we come.”

Hirgon nodded as Theoden tied a red ribbon around the arrow among its black feathers and handed it back to him. After a draught of water, the two messengers of Gondor were soon riding out if the city and back toward Gondor.

The Dunedain and the elves stood nearby. Lady Annienna saw Kano and Gaelrin standing by the door listening, and she could see Gaelrin was in pain. She came over to her and bowed, saying,

”Your pain is great, yet I see much healing since we last met in Helms Deep. Maybe I can come and tend to you both one more time before this war?”

She gave Kano and Gaelrin a nod.

~ ~ ~

Dunhama paused and looked at Athilda, then over to a torn and wrinkled pile of fabric that was in the middle of the floor.

”As much as I would like to see you put that on again, I don’t think it would be suitable to go walking through the hills.”

Dunhama took a sausage and took a bite from it as he went to the back of the room. He opened a door and said,

”It looks like Lady Eowyn had some wardrobe here. Maybe you will find something suitable here?”

He didn't say what he saw in there, and closed the closet door. Wondering what he would wear. His light breeches and tunic would be fine if it doesn’t get cold. He would be fine.He went and sat and took a piece of buttered bread.

~ ~ ~

Railan felt tears forming in her eyes. War had come, and even now the people started to prepare. She knew Dunhama would be ridinf off to battle, and she felt a pain deep inside. She looked around for Wulgov, but he was nowhere to be seen. She then finished her duties and sought out Lady Eowyn. She found her in her riding clothes, and looking at her sword. Did the Lady intend to ride to war too? Railan looked down as Eowyn turned to her.

”Prepare us to ride to Dunharrow as the King ordered. Take only what you will need Railan, and what weapons which you may have. War has come to Rohan in the form of a messenger and a black arrow.”

Railan felt the fear rush over her. She was torn between trying to find Dunhama and Athilda, and she wondered where Wulgov was. Somehow, last night’s drunkenness didn’t seem to be real to her anymore. She started collecting the Lady’s rugged clothing, and went to get her own. She would do what she could for the kingdom. When she came to Athilda’s quarters, she paused but did not go in. She instead walked by to go meet Lady Eowyn after she got packed and their horses ready.

~ ~ ~

Wulgov watched as the two riders streaked from the city. He then turned and watched the lane where he had seen Dunhama emerge from a small house. He nodded to himself as he heard the cry of muster spread through the city. What would be his part in this? Had the King forgotten about his probation terms? If allowed, he would go to war for Rohan, but he was not a horseman. He did know that Dunhama would go. He sat and watched as the sun started to burn red in the east as it cut through the black clouds rising from Mordor.

"I'm sorry," Kano said with an appolgetic bow of the head. "I just thought perhaps to ease you into getting use to it, but you are correct..." With that he walked slowly on his way. Once at the door to the hall he listened intently to the messenger.

So war it was, yet again. So soon... He sighed, then looked up as Lady Annienna approached. He nodded, "If you would, please. That would be most welcomed."
