After there had been some quite warm, sunny days from the middle of last week to about Saturday, we've been having frost at night from the night of Sat/Sun. Even though days are sunny, the temperatures are remaining low for so much sunshine; continental cold high pressure system squatting here again - and keeping still much-needed precipitation away, unfortunately.

Looks like we've had a month of drought regionally again. With early April bringing temperatures over 25°C (77°F) I really do not want to extrapolate to proper summer.

We finally got a bit of rain regionally last Monday (13th). While parts of western Germany along the Rhine river had some heavier rainfall earlier in the year, even to the point of near-flooding, the eastern and southeastern part (where we are) are again experiencing drought and heightened forest fire alerts. Some blasted fat-butted high-pressure system squatting over central and eastern Europe again.

There has been a slight relaxation of restriction due to COVID-19, including allowing some shops to reopen. As a counter-measure, as of Monday nose-and-mouth masks will become compulsory in public transportation, taxis, and all stores, including those basic-need stores that had remained open (supermarkets etc.) all along. The cashier at one store we visited last Wednesday pointed this out, in fact that the stores then have to turn away customers without a mask.

Things are going to sort of open Monday. We'll see if people have the stomach to actually go out to a restaurant.

The concept of a pandemic still seems to be foreign to all too many ...

It was a clear cool morning. Clouds gathering as it hits noon though.

The weather has been exceptional but it's now clouding over. Whether or not we'll actually get rain is questionable.

This April was a flat-out drought month with precipitation at 6% (in words: six percent) of long-term averages. May doesn’t look much better, with two days of (intermittent) rain so far. And the Forecast for the next seven days is for unrelenting sunshine, aka drought worsening. The agricultural and forestry sectors in much of Germany are banging their heads against hard places at the prospect of the third serious drought year in a row. And on the agricultural side, for example asparagus growers (it’s the asparagus season in Germany right now) are tearing their hair. First, since the fall of the “iron curtain” roughly 30 years ago, they have been depending on seasonal workers from eastern Europe – apparently mainly Poles and Romanians, but cross-border travel was severely restricted. And even when it was relaxed for these seasonal workers a bit, numbers were well below normal. Add to that the fact that a major customer for their produce, restaurants, had been shut down until just recently – these farmers are not happy (Germans seem not to be first choice as laborers for this back-breaking work, least of all our xenophobic garbage).

Going out to the store is like jumping into a petrie dish.

I've noticed many people using masks but not wearing disposable gloves. Surfaces are more of an issue than people coughing. I have not heard anybody cough when I've been shopping.

We've had the seventh year in a row with sub-average precipitation during spring. Agriculture and forestry are being seriously affected ...

We're having a fairly typical June here. Sunshine interspersed with thunder showers. The temperatures are a bit below normal for this time of year. I love thunder storms. Unfortunately, my poor dog doesn't feel the same way about him. His 'hiding' place is on a blanket between my recliner and the wall.

The grass has been growing like crazy and I'm going to have to mow again this week, if we get some sunny weather. My neighbour does my back lawn with his riding mower which saves me some trouble. I have a new gas mower (the price was right - free) and I'm anxious to try it out.
