Elijah was a great choice for these movie, but the thing is that Frodo was about 50 years old when he left on his journey. I know that the ring prolonged his life, but he probably didn't look 18, either! I think it was a mistake on the make-up artists falt and the director/producers, not Mr. Wood himself.

Peace be upon you,
Tasare

I think that he was a little too young... but what the heck. He played the part really really really well, and that's all that matters to me :D

I think he was a bit too young, but I think they shouldn't have made him looked like 50, because he got the rings when he was 33 and since the´n the ring was delaying old age.

I agree with Meltithenniel. He played Frodo extremely well, and that's all that really matters to me! Whether he looked the proper age or not, he did a fantastic job with the character and that's what people will remember.

I was thinking that as well... but he never used it, and he kept it stored away... but i think as long as it was in his possession it might have delayed his physical appearance...

I think pj also chose Elijah because a younger main character would appeal a whole lot more than a 50 year old hobbit... so maybe it was intentional.

If I remember right, isn't the aging of hobbits different than humans? Hobbit's age slower than most humans...I remember reading that somewhere..
Anyways, most hobbits lived to old ages "The Old Took" lived until 130 years old....
Also, When the hobbits are 50 years oldish, they can be considered in their "young hobbit middle age" :P Because around 33 they are in their "Teenage years"
In conclusion, yes the movie didn't follow exact dates, but we do have to keep in mind that a 50 year old human won't look like a 50 year old hobbit :P

I dont thiknk Elijah looks too young, he had just 'come of age' when he got the Ring, didn't he? And the Ring prolonged his life, so he's just perfect! and because hobbits live up to 130 yrs, 50 in our age would be like 30... ELIJAH WOOD ROCKS HE PLAYED A GOOD ROLE AND SATISFIED ME 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But do you think the common audience out there knows all this stuff like we do, though? I mean, to the a person that doesn't know LotR as well as we do they wouldn't think of something 33 years of age; they would probably think that Frodo was fresh out of High School. The common audience has nothing to relate to.
On the other hand they probably wouldn't know (or care) the Frodo was not fresh out of High School but infact 50.

Peace be upon you my Sisters and Brothers,
Tasare

I always thought it was rather interesting that out of the four hobbits, the oldest hobbit was played by the youngest actor and the youngest hobbit was played by the oldest actor.

yes you're right... I never thought about that. If you think about it, then Elijah isn't too young for Frodo I think...

Sidawethiel is right. Because, when the movie first starts, he's just out of his tweens right? And The ring wouldn't have effected him much on that time anyway and yeah. 50 is middle age, so i think it's good, they also probaly made him look young in the movies because it makes him look more vulnerable and makes the audience feel sorry for him.....

I always thought he was a little too young, but Sidawethiel is right: a 50 year old hobbit doesn't look like a 50 year old man. And what Mel said ("A younger main character would appeal more") is also true.

I dont think Elijah looked to young at all. To me he definatly looked the part. He did such an incredible job acting it doesnt even matter the way he looked.

You have to consider that hobbits mature a lot differintely than we do, and 33 [which I do believe is was his age when he left the Shire], is actually considered kind of the teen years of a hobbits life. So, I think Elijah was cast at the correct age. :)

And I also think that looking young matches Frodo's personality in the movies and making Sam looking a bit older than Frodo is good, because Sam wants to protect Frodo and so on and so I would perhaps look a bit strange if he looked much younger than Frodo...
