"Possibly," Lothwen replied. "But let's check the rocks first." Walking unsteadily over the rocky terrain, Lothwen made her way to the cluster of rocks, only to find them bare, with no trace of any sticks. "Oh," she said, disappointed. "We'll have to look somewhere else."

Luthien thanked Haldir for the water, and tore a strip of cloth from her tunic. Dipping it in the water, she removed the athelas poultice and bathed the wound gently, watching Meleth's face periodically for any movement.

Haldir occasionally looked over to Luthien healing Meleth to make sure nothing attacked them.
"Oh blast it," said Haldir, looking around. "Where can we find big enough sticks or branches?"

Meleth was still very white and a spasm of pain passed over her face as Luthien touched her side, but then she was still again, her breathing shallow.

Miriel kneeled next to Luth and laid the back of her hand on Meleths forehead. When Luthien touched her wound her face was twinged by pain. "Possibly a fever?" Miriel asked Luthien who was still busy cleaning the wound.

"I have no idea," Lothwen said. "What will we do if we can't find any branches? Should she ride on one of our horses?"

Haldir looked doubtful. "That would be slightly uncomfortable for her," said Haldir. "What else can we do.." He glanced over at the three and shrugged. "I suppose that's all we can do," he agreed.

Elessar watched worriedly, he felt stupid with nothing to do. He wasn't a good healer, and there were enough people looking for branches. Finally, he walked over to Luthien and Miriel. "Is there anything I can do? I really want to help."

Haldir peered around the trees and spotted a slumped-over one with no leaves. It was a dead tree then. He ran over to it and picked up one of its long limbs. "I found some wood," he yelled to the group. "Someone come help me bring some back!"
He hauled a few thick branches over to where Meleth was lying.

"Wood! Good," said Lothwen. She could not hide that she was very relieved. She went over to the dead tree and helped Haldir carry over some of its wood.

Luthien nodded in response to Miriel's question, "I fear she left it untreated for too long, it is infected." She heard Haldir's shout and turned to Elessar, "If you must be helpful, go bring back enough wood to create a stretcher," she paused, "please."
Returning to her work, she finished cleaning to wound as well as possible. "I need a way to keep the athelas against her skin. Miriel, could you find a blanket or something, and tear a strip long enough to go around Meleth's body? That will have to do for now."

Miriel nodded. "It's a pity we left everything at our camp. I didn't think for a minute of taking anything." She took her cloak and ripped a long strip of the warm garment. "But this will do."
She handed it to Luthien and watched her make a bandage.
