Well, wait a minute there Melda, think about the Newfies for a second. Newfoundlanders, from the province farthest east, have very strong Canadian accents, the likes of which you won't hear anywhere else in the world. They have quite a different culture as well, and we westerners enjoy making fun of them

I suppose they think we have strong accents, as well. And then you have the Inuit people of the north, the prairie "rednecks", and so on. So I would say we have plenty of dialects, not to mention the many immigrants with strong accents from their home countries!

Dialects of what? We speak English and French mainly, and though the French does differ from what's spoken in France, those are basically the only two languages. I live in an area heavily populated with immigrants from the Middle East, so they speak their language sometimes, but I think that's pretty unique to my city.

Dialects as in different ways of pronouncing words and phrasing things. Like Beri mentioned with American Southern and NYC accents. I've noticed differences in most countries so I assume Canada has them too.

Ohhh, I see what you mean. I was thinking dialects as in different variations of the same language, like the difference between Quebecois French and actual French. But if you just mean sort of different accents and variations on phrasing, then yes, there are differences.

I know that we in the West make fun of people in the East and vice versa, but that's mostly political. I mean, in my opinion.

Yup.. exactly.. sorry I didn't make it clearer in the first place. I just talked to a Canadian and he told me that Canada is about the same size as Russia.... that's just incredibly big...

Pffft, he exaggerates. *Grabs globe* If you don't use a flat world map, which tends to skew sizes, you can see that Russia is noticeably bigger than Canada. If I were dedicated, I would figure out the exact land mass of each country, but I'm not. And you know what's weird? Canada has the population of the state of California!

EDIT: I take it back. I'm dedicated. Canada is approx. 3,851,787 square miles, or if you prefer metric, 9,976,139 square kilometres. Russia, on the other hand, is 6,563,706 square miles or 17,000,000 square km. Quite a difference there, wouldn't you agree?

Hmm.... so I may conclude that Canadians are liars... or a least exaggerators.... or perhaps that 50% of all Canadians (at least of all who participated in this survey, which is an unknown guy and Meldawen) are liars.. or just really bad in geography.....

Well...Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world. So I'm guessing this person just didn't realize the large difference between the largest and second largest.

Yes, I agree with Luthien, we do have quite a few dialects, and many immigrants with strong accents.

Question: Where you guys live, do you have any large multi-cultural festivals?

Edmonton, Alberta, and we have a huge amount of Middle-Eastern immigrants here so we have some of those festivals and parades and stuff. Mill Woods, the southeastern part of the city, has a population that is 30% Middle-Eastern (woops, I almost typed Middle-Earthen there!).

^Haha Melda! I was just down in Calgary where I saw a sign "stay off the planters", but at first I thought it said "stay off the palantirs"! :P

Anyways...everything here in Edmonton is multicultural, as Melda was saying. We have one weekend at the beginning of August dedicated to different cultures. About 50 countries have booths where they serve national dishes, and take turns showing their music/dancing/skills on nearby stages. It is fun and a great cultural experience!

You do? I find it quite boring here... nothing fun to do, except for the occasional Highland Games and the very rare Ren faires...
