I found it quite easy to read. I read it in fourth grade and I loved it. Later I picked it up again, just in case my youthly mind didn't catch the fully effect, and I loved it even more. I voted no, because I thought it was pretty easy. I think it was exciting from the start. Especially since I had recently read the Hobbit right before I started LOTR, and I thought it was fanstastic.

It took me awhile to read FotR the first time. The writing styling was totally different from what I was used to, and it is a pretty long book. I don't remember how long it took me though.

^ The writing style is pretty different. I'm even a big reader of fantasy/ King Arthur type stuff, and I still think that LOTR is different from any other book I've ever read. In a wonderful way.

To some degree it was. I have trouble, even in rereading the book with the books in which it's just Frodo, Sam, and Gollum. Trouble in that I don't like it as much as the other parts. Gollum is such a slimy little cuss, that I have difficulty stomaching all his evil deeds.

i read the first book in spanish when i was in fourth grade( back then, being my one and only language, though i didnt have much of a vocabulary of it) so it was really hard, i didnt understand half of it! though i re-read it in english once i had enough of a good and strong vocabulary(7th grade) and it was not hard at all

I read the first three chapters when I was nine. Me and my siblings were staying at our autna nd uncle's because our parents were gone. none of my cousins were there, and I got kind of bored, so I skimmed the hobbit, and started on fotr. It was kind of hard, first time I'd ever read anything in that style, but I was and is a huge reader, so I didn't find totally a challenge .

Not a huge reader at all, sorry to say, so when I started to read it at 11 years-old it took me a year, but that was because I put it down. Then I got to Moria and I was hooked! Then Two Towers took me two weeks.

Lol, I had no trouble reading it the first time. I read FotR in less than one day (yes, I really did...it was not a school day for me, and because I had worked ahead in everything else, I had nothing to do but sit and read, so I did....and I hate some meals, but really, I just read), then I read TTT the next day, and RotK the day after that. As I recall, FotR was on a Wednesday, TTT was on Thursday, and RotK was on Friday.
Since then, my fastest reading of the books was my 23rd time, when I read them between Friday and Sunday. (again, I didn't have all that much else to do, so I could just sit and read for a long time)

I had a little struggle in reading FotR the first time, because I didn't understand all of it. (note: I was 12 back then and my mother tongue is not english, and I read it in english) but when i got to start i couldnt stop

Lol, I haven't read it in any language except English, yet, but I might read it in Slovak or German next. My German's just a 'little' spotty for something like that, but...I could do it.

I prefer the english version because it's the original language and the finnish version is so absurd! I have the 50th anniversary one volume edition, I love it!

^Lucky! *pouts*
I have very nice copies of LOTR though. They have pretty fold out maps in the back, which I use all the time because I like to be able to picture things.
The only language I speak fluently is English. Therefore, I have only read LOTR in English. Sre the other versions much different, or does it translate out pretty much the same?

well, I dunno about other languages, but the finnish version turned out very... absurd. when tom bombadil sings something like hey dol merry dol dingadingadillo (something like that..) it's translated into: hei nöpönenä, which means something like hey cutie.. I just don't like the finnish version, and you know there are hundreds of poems, song, and verses in the book, but when they're translated, they are a whole lot different. that's why i like the english version, you can know exactly what Tolkien meant.

Tom Bombadil saying "Hey cutie!" That made my day. Can you picture that?
I guess that is the main problem wiht translation is that there are phrases that exist in some languages that don't in others. Although, we had never heard of merry dol derry dol, etc. til Tokien. They could have left it the same.
I'm glad I read LOTR in English then. Another thing is that I like to be able to enjoy what I'm reading, so if I have to translate it, I won't pay attention to the story and won't enjoy it as much.
Out of curiousity, were the names of people and places changed. Like Frodo or Lothlorien? That would be the worst.

Frodo is Frodo Reppuli... not Baggins. Meriaoc Brandybuck is Merri Brandibuk, Peregrin Took is Peregrin Tuk... they've kind of simplified some of the hard names... but the places names, if i remember correctly, are the same. at least most of them. ps. Samwise Gamgee is Samwais gamgi, which I hate! that's why i dont like the finnish version, see?
