I'm a Christian, and I take my faith very seriously. However, witchcraft, magic, and good vs. evil in books has never really bothered me. I know what I believe in and I can hold true to it without worries.

I love Eragon, Narnia, Harry Potter, and LotR for what they really are... books. That's it. They are stories written for readers to enjoy. I don't overanalyse them or look for hidden meanings [except maybe in Narnia since it is a Christian based book], I just read. That's what the author intended for us to do with these books in the first place.

I have no problem with Eragon, though I'm not allowed to read HP and I don't want to.

Basically, this is what my mom has explained vaguely to me: magic in books is OK, so long as people are using it to try to help people, and it's very obvious that those who use it for other reasons are bad.

*shrugs* As for me, I pretty much agree. I have no problem with Eragon, LotR, and the Shannara books, but there are several other books where it goes too far for me.

My mom respects my decisions to read what I read, and she knows that if something is inappropriate or trash that I don't need to have in my mind, I'll stop reading it. She doesn't mind magic in books, but she makes sure I accept that it's just a story and it can't happen, especially with things like Harry Potter. Actually, what she objects to most about Harry Potter is his morality. He lies a lot, he thinks its perfectly okay to do anything he wants to his enemies (specifically Malfoy, Snape) but she knows I'm not going to follow their examples. I really like how she treats my like an adult and doesn't assume that I'm not mature enough to distinguish those things myself.

Hmmm... I like a little magic in books, but not an over exessive amount. I want to read Eragon, but all the copies my library has are checked out....

Precisely how my mum feels. If I'm not comfortable with reading a certain book or if I don't agree with it, I just don't read it.

I think it's a bit silly when people don't read books because of magic. Now, it's different when you dont want to read a book because you dont enjoy it and all. And i suppose for some a bit of magic is cause enough to put a book down. But i think giving things like Eragon and Harry Potter up because magic represents soemthing evil is..i guess, missing out on something great. But it totally repect that, because if someone made me read a book that said that the only way to save the world is to kill off a third of the worlds population i'd be like hey, this is dumb i dont wanna read that.
But i suppose......this was all a ramble, but yeah, I agree with Larael and Meldawen, my parents and my family and i are also strongly Catholic and my parents respect the fact that I can choose what i read, because it wont necessarily affect my judgement.
Like when I read the DaVinci code, good book, lots of blasphemy, i read it,ok, end of story.

ooh...what a useless post.

my mom's not like that. she often lectures me on this stuff it makes me want to do it just to spite her...
but she thinks she can read you like a book, and i hate that...
i envy a lot of people's parents, but my parents do have ogod qualities... its just... i hate their bad ones :P

i read the davinci code.
it was a good book. but its JUST A BOOK. that's what people need to realize. nobody's gonna like (or very few people) convert or something just cause a BOOK told them so. it's an INANIMATE OBJECT. <-- although it could shake something, i think if you have faith in your religion you shouldn't worry about that.

but who am i to say? ... im not atheist, i just, dont practice any religion...
okay this is getting to the religion side... and im sure the mods don't want that :halo:

are there any people wo feel evil right now and would like to chuck people in Mt doom? it's fun...

I'm allowed to read practially everything. Yes, that does include 18+ stuff though I tend to read 'those boring fantasy books' :P
It happens often that me'n'mom are reading the same book at the moment and we steal it from each other all the time just to be able to read it... :teehee: I love that^^

I read HP when I was 7 or 8, LotR at arounda 9 and other stuff when it came out in Slovenia. Neither of those has ever been forbidden for me and everytime I notify people Iv bought another book, everyone is like 'Not again'.

 When I was little, I deprived myself from reading for YEARS, convincing myself that every other book in the world were just like the boring ones we had to read for school, so around when I turned 11 or 12 I started reading any good fantacy/adventure/action book or fanfic I could get my hands on. And now I am ending up asking my mom for a book for christmas...

I hated reading for the first year I knew how. Everything I read was really dull. But then, at the age of seven, I discovered a book series called Redwall. I was way too young for it, it was written for 10 and 11 year olds. But I started reading it anyway, and fought my way through. I became totally obsessed. After that, I liked reading. I read and read and very soon shot way past my grade level, and have stayed above grade level ever since. I read the Hobbit at age 8, LotR at age 10. I've read Shakespeare, Dickens, even a tiny bit of Chaucer. But my favorite thing to read, above all, is fantasy, and above that, all of Tolkien's writings. I fought through the Silmarillion at age 12 (I was insane to try it that young) and now I've read that twice, I've read Unfinished Tales, the Lays of Beleriand, and part of the Shaping of Middle Earth.

In other words... I love to read. :)

I've always loved reading. When I was a kid, mom read me stories and looong fairytales so I could fall asleep. I could read all by myself and w/t troubles at the age of 6.
People loved me cause I sat quietly in some corner with a book in my hands, being a good girl while everyone else was being normal (sadly, people still think I'm 8 years old..)

I love reading when I get the chance...I used to read every day but now I don't as much. I generally don't have the time, but when I get into a book I don't put it down, which results in many library books being dropped in the bath :P I'm an athiest so I read whatever I want without being influenced by anything I guess. My parents are athiests too, so I get a lot of freedom in loads of areas. They are pretty cool, I can watch what I want, read what I want...pretty much do what I want. My parents are really easy-going.
