StarGazer - I've heard that about users of compound bows who think they can snap off a few shots easily from a recurve. *snickers* Someday I'll try my hand at firing a recurve; I haven't shot one since junior high.
Eä - unfortunately, my hubby doesn't build longbows. He does, however, have high hopes of reproducing the style of crossbow seen in TTT. Its concept of a lever-action reloading system and a 'hopper' to store a bundle of bolts bears a vague resemblance to the Chinese repeating crossbow: http://www.atarn.org/chinese/rept_xbow.htm
And as far as the bad guys usually being the ones using crossbows, that actually has roots in reality. If you surf over to this website http://www.thebeckoning.com/medieval/crossbow/chronology.html and look about a third of the way down the page, you'll see how use of the crossbows were considered a very bad idea by the medieval Church.
So, how renaissance Flanders and Germany came to be such advocates of the weapon and in turn developed it into an art form (in style and use) is still a mystery...

Hmm... might be a rooted in historical facts, but I'm more inclined to believe that it just fits the plotline better in most cases. The 'good guys' are overpowered by the cruel enemy with stronger weapons, and are thus forced to fight the harder against the superior force - and so their final victory is the more just and rightful
This is my own personal and humble explanation. And only because I have Robin Hood and LotR in mind... I'm sure there are movies where crossbow-guys are fighting for good!!

Oo cool Hobo! Are you still going to buy that one that you showed me from Bowstick.com, or a different one?
Ehh I'm pretty content with my current bow, though I really really really want a new one...

Even the crossbow-user covets those elven bows seen at Helm's Deep.
Our weekly archery practices (done outdoors) have unfortunately been put on the back burner until warmer weather returns - we had our first dusting of snow today...

*sighs*
And since I'm packing away the archery equipment for the winter, I can look back on things like this while the snow flies, for a reminder of past practices:
http://www.freegatearmory.com/photos/blanket.jpg
What you don't see in the picture are the three recurves and the longbow that also typically show up at the weekly practices...

^Nice picture. Since the arrows for cross bows are so short you'd actually be able to carry a lot more than usual arrows.
I've got a question which is actually more of a RP-related question, but I hope you can help me anyway. Legolas (and possibly Aragorn and other archers) in LotR are shown carrying their bows on their backs when they don't use them. How would they - technically - fit them there? I really like the idea, but I can't figure out if it's actually a smart thing to do....
