*pats Kit's head*
Quick people, let's get some structured discussions going in here again! I believe I brought this up earlier, but I think I'll bring it up again for the sake of real discussion.
Do any of you ladies find role models in book characters or movie characters? How do you define a role model for yourself? Does s/he have to have certain characteristics?

I don't really have a role model. And I don't think I would get them from a book even if I did because most of the books I read are fiction and using a fictional person/thing as a role model...it just doesn't really make sense. And movie characters are just characters...again, fictional. That's just for me, anyway.

My role model is probably Hermione from the Harry Potter books. She is so strong and smart. I love her strength and just everything about her.

Yeah, she is really strong. Arwen and Eowyn too, I would have to say. They're the closest things I have to role models, I would say.

Mine is Eowyn and Hermione
Eowyn- Because she is strong and brave
Hermione- Because she is smart and wise

Let's have more substance to our discussion here.
Descibe how you're similar to your idols and why you idol that person.
I don't have many idols, and most of my idols are men for some reason. It is perhaps that I want to be as good as the men, to aim for the equality of women in everyone's eyes. There are still those few countries that view women lower status to men. And it's sad that they still do even in this day in age.

Personally, I find that many of my role models and idols in life are both guys and girls. Most seem to be fictional characters too. It just seems that fictional characters [such as Eowyn and Hermione] show the best of human characteristics. Loyalty and strength of mind are two of the most prominent aspects I look for in a role model or idol. I'm not one to call someone like Jessica Simpson or Paris Hilton an idol of mine.

Thanks LoR.
Larael: I agree, real-life celebrities never seem to be the best idols, although they are human, they make many mistakes; the fact taht they are publicized a lot can account for a lot of their actions.

Mhmmm, that's why I picked Eowyn and Hermione....the charries raither than the people that played them.

How come that Mom is often a role model?
Well, I understand why. She is the loving, caring person, who is always there for you. She carried you, fed you, taught you everything, blah blah.
But aren't we a bit biased to say that mom is our role model? She brought up her child according to the values she believed in, she shaped it as she saw best whether intentionally or un-consciously...
I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this... but comments on mother as a role model would be interesting

I also admire Sam in LotR for his courage, bravery, loyalty and un-ending kindness. No matter what he stuck by Frodo and was always there for him. He is also my role model.
EDIT: I think I am like him because I am also very loyal to my family and friends and I think in most situations I am pretty brave.

Ea: I love that you brought that up. I can't see my Mom as my "idol" perse, but she's certainly my hero. I admire her so much and I love all the things she's sacrificed for me and my family. I love her.

My mom definately is my hero, maybe not so much my idol as well. I admire her strength, wisdom, compassion, dedication and perserverence. She is so strong and kind-hearted. I will always look up to her and wish to follow in her footsteps.

Well I have idols but with most of them its not the whole person its self its just parts of their personality. Like I'll like one thing about one person and another thing about another and in my mind it all just forms one super person that I should be like, even though most of the time I can't be like anyone but myself.

I don't have any role models from books or movies ... too clicheed, too unreal. But yeah, I s'pose my mom is a kinda idol to me. Which is bad seeing she's an awfully strong person (ie, strong personality. Too strong, almost) and makes most of decisions for me. >< Just don't go explaining this ain't good or else I'll cyber-kick you. I've already figured that out by myself.
