I stopped trying to understand the males around me that I'm not related to.
what exactly was the original topic? I don't want Kit to eat us for off-topic-ness...

um, OK!
Female charries are great if they're written properly. As I said, a female Aragorn just doesn't work for me, and neither does a ditzy helpless girly-girl.
One must find the perfect balence meant for the role and go with it.

its ok to have an amzing female charrie, and a male charrie helping her out, but not too much so that she seems helpless

The best female i read is Lisa in Pictures of Adam. She was actually very realistic. She lived in a middle class had no boyfriend and was totally into her photography. Nothing went to terribly fast and she was just so realistic compared to some female characters.

I agree. Some people think that girls aren't as good as boys in some way - which is very wrong.

Hmm, it's rare for me to find a female character that isn't the main character that I don't dislike. Arya, Eowyn, Arwen, they all pretty much annoyed me.
I don't think female characters should be portrayed exactly as men, we're very much different, but I would like them portrayed a little harder, if that makes sense.

I also read that book. I think Lisa acted great through the whole story. She can handle the situation, or she even tries. She's not 'cool' and she's not too strong and you can see it, when you read the book. First she tries to do it all alone, to handle the situation, but then she notices, that it's impossible and she calls for help. I like that, because she notices her 'weakness' and doesn't hide it.
That's really strong, from my point of view.

I kinda like the freaky-outsider-girls in books and movies... Only, in most Hollywood movies they transform from outsiders to the hippest and cutest girl in school or w/e it is, and that's well... not too realistic, and it kinda bugs me *nodnod*

I admit to loving the sword-weilding, horse-riding, gun-fighting hero than the heroine, whatever she does. I just love the romance of it

Hmm.. seems my opinion is sort of different. I like the damsel-in-distress type girls as long as they're not annoying. I'm such a romantic when it comes to such things. I'm not really into the whole tough, warrior heroines. I'd rather have a heroine that has more brains than most but not completely useless in fighting. A nice balance.
Guys are a different story... I read a book about a girl who fell in love with a boy who was crippled. It was the sweetest story and the guy was actually the strongest character. I love guys who have strength of mind and heart. Physical strength is just an add on.

Damsels in distress are usually comic relieves, but tend to get annoying... tough but soft on inside warrior lady? Nice, but sadly overused. Gah, writers are so rarely innovative ;_;
