I remember that I skiped a lot of pages when I read FOTR for the first time.
First I totally ignored the Concerning Hobbits Prelude thingy, then I skipped the hobbits journey to Buckland. After that I think the only thing I skipped was the poems and songs.
2nd time I read it without skippping anything.

I just finished reading it for the second time, and I still thought it a bit difficult. But, then again, I was interrupted every ten seconds and had to get refocused after each time. The first time I read it, I retained almost none of the story. All that I remembered was a few random lines and Boromir didn't officially die until the Two Towers.

Nope. I'm a very vivid reader...though the beginning chapter was a bit rough. Other than that..I was constantly reading the book while I walked home from school...

Absolutely not. I read FOTR when I was 10 and devoured it... and went on the read TTT and ROTK as fast as my little eyes could do it. lol I remember spending all day sitting on the sofa reading reading reading.... this was in the summer. =) I wouldn't get up all day just cause I HAD to find out what would happen next. And also in ROTK I was so mad when it went back to the rest of the Fellowship at the beginning. I wanted to hear about Frodo! lol
I read all of the prologue except for the Pipeweed thingy... my Dad told me I didn't have to read that. lol I guess I'm just an avid/abnormal reader because I never got bored at all throughout the books. Maybe it's just me....

Lol same here. only with ROTK and TTT mainly. I read about the first 5 chapters of ROTK. and the same with the Sil, which my brother claims is "boring" and he hasnt even read it!

I read FotR when I was about 12 years old. I read the hole book at once, at it seemed to be VERY thick and the text was so small...
I can still remember that the Prologue was very very boring. I didn't understand almost anything of it. But when the real book started, I was hooked!
Now I'm reading FotR in English! I bought the book in autumn, and I have read it only a little, but although I'm reading now the part, where they are leaving Bree. I thought that reading with another language than my own would be difficult, but actually it wasn't Sometimes I use a dictionary, but usually if I can't understand the word, it doesn't matter. I can almost guess what it means, so it is not so important

I read the Hobbit first, actually, and I do remember wanting to read the Fellowship after that.
The party, in the beginning, wasn't that bad. I, actually, cracked up at the fact that Bilbo turned himself invisible to escape the party. However, being used to the quick action/violence/suspense of the Hobbit, I hard a hard time reading the chapters before Rivendell.
Although, like in the movie.. the plot-line "picks up" after Rivendell, in my opinion.

When I first read FOTR, I was around 11 years old. I found it a little hard at the time as English is not my first language thus I couldn't understand some of those words properly. When I read it second time I found it very easy as I was 13 years old at the time.

I was rather young when I read it, the finishing of it became an act of will due to my attention span.
