I just have to point out this crucial factor into why he was chosen:

Elijah Wood is Frodo Baggins

There's nothing more truthful. If Frodo Baggins ever did exist, it would most definitley be within Elijah Wood :)

That would explain the reason he didn't win an Oscar. He wasn't really acting.

I was always bothered by his young look. I mean, yes, he played very well, but I imagined Frodo much older. He was supposed to be a lot older than Merry and Pippin and he looked younger than them

haha, I couldn't have said it better. :-D I don't think he looks too young - he's a hobbit, and don't hobbits live generally longer anyway? and after he assumes the Ring, he's not supposed to age any further.

At first, when i read the book i imagined Frodo much older too, and when i saw the movie, i said to my parents:"Is that Frodo?! He looks more like a fairy with those eyes!" But, i guess, i just had to get used to it, because now i couldn't imagine anyone else playing Frodo, and he played really well. And after all, as Frodos-guide said, Elijah Wood is Frodo Baggins! :)

But hey, they lived around 100-112 years and Frodo was in his 50. And he didn't even touched the Ring before Gandalf and Bilbo gave him.

I was just reading FotR last night and it does say that when Frodo is 50, he has the appearance of a "young and robust hobbit" or something along those lines. So even though he doesn't use the Ring, it still has an effect on him, I guess. :erm:

oh, true. and also what Shadowcat said about him being "young and robust". what with the combination of that description and the fact that he was the Ringbearer, I suppose Frodo would have looked youthful. (gahh, Elijah Wood still looks good, ten years later!)

perhaps I always think of him younger because I saw the movies first. :P which is sort of a pity, because I never had the opportunity to imagine the main characters, but oh well. my opinion would have changed after seeing him anyway. :)
and besides, I would rather have someone that looked young - or too young - that was a brilliant actor, than have someone who looked older and didn't give as heartfelt, poignant, realistic, brilliant, stunning (fine, I'll stop with the adjectives...) performance. :)

Haha, thats also truth. No, I really like Elijah's acting, I think he really became Frodo but I am more close to my own interpretation of him ;)

I don't think it affected him, because he didn't use it... then we could even say it affected Sam- he was near the ring too... mabey they just didn't see him grow older... but, i don't know...
But i allways imagined him like as old as Bilbo or something like that... after all it may have been, because Bilbo was 50 too, when he found the ring and then he didn't grow older.

I don't know, I don't think Bilbo used the Ring all that regularly, and yet he lived unnaturally long. I think it affected Frodo because he was chosen Ringbearer, and in a sense that Ring was tied to him. perhaps that's why he lived so long on his quest to Mordor. he was without much food and water and faced a strenuous task, but he accomplished it. it was like the Ring didn't want him to die, almost. I think Sam kept going not so much as for the Ring, but for his friend. if Frodo had succumbed to bodily pains, I think he probably would have taken up the Ring and continued for his friend's sake, and at the same time experienced the effects of the Ring.
...ehm, that's my opinion anyway. it sounded better in my head. xD

Yeah, mabey you're right :) but...

I don't agree with that. I'm sure,. the ring wanted him to die, because it saw that it can't make Frodo put it on... okay, he put it on three times, but it couldn't really make him do anything. I think the ring wanted to leave Frodo.
