I think Arwen was suited for Aragorn. Their love was like that of Luthien and Beren. Arwen forsook her immortality for Aragorn, just like Luthien did for Beren. I think Arwen was meant to fall in love with a mortal. She was likened to Luthien by her looks, though this is not the only reason I think they belonged together. Aragorn and Arwen grew up together. For Aragorn to suddenly leave Arwen for Eowyn would have been strange. Yes, it seems that Aragorn and Eowyn were right for each other, but they had no history to them, there was no fight they had to go through to finally be together.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense .

^Yeah, I think I get what you mean.

"So many have said," she answered gravely. "Yet her name is not mine. Though maybe my doom will be not unlike hers..."

Thanks, Princess of Ithilien :). It makes me feel better knowing I make sense :P. I remember that passage from The Return of the King. I loved that part. It explained a lot of things about Aragorn and Arwen's relationship.

Looking at it from the point of Beren and Luithien i guess Arwen was made for Aragorn, I still believe that Eowyn was more suited to Aragorn however. I believe that the fact Tolkien decided to put Arwen - a character who seems altogether less suited to Aragorn in personality and race - really made a statement.

:)

That's a good point, Frodos-Guide :). There are points that make Arwen better for Aragorn, but it also works the same way for Eowyn.

Just a thought: If Eowyn ended up with Aragorn, what would happen to Faramir :erm:?

By the way, Princess of Ithilien, I love your picture :-D.

Not to sound sappy but I think Aragorn and Arwen were perfect for each other. Aragorn cared for Eowyn but just as friend, I think. Aragorn and Arwen met way too early and those two knew each other well wherease Eowyn was looking up to him as a future king and a hero. :)

Don't worry, Arianna, you don't sound sappy :). Aragorn and Arwen already had a relationship before Aragorn even met Eowyn. To just throw what he had with Arwen away would just be, pardon my lack of better words, stupid. Aragorn didn't care for Eowyn the way he did Arwen. He would have had to force himself to learn to love Eowyn, if he could.

I believe Arwen and Aragorn are perfect for each other. I know Tolkien didn't emphasize the relationship very much, but he gave us hints sprinkled throughout the Fellowship of the importance Arwen meant to Aragorn.

I agree, Lady Raine of the Rangers. Although there wasn't much emphasis on Arwen and Aragorn's relationship, you got a sense of how much they meant to each other.

I think Arwen affects everything Aragorn does throughout The Lord of the Rings, the book. I think there just wasn't a way to put her in the story itself. Thank goodness for the appendices!

I agree, Princess of Ithilien. There were parts where Arwen was mentioned, and she was described in detail in The Fellowship of the Ring., though. On another note, yes, where would we be without the appendices :)?

Le gasp :swoon:! Another icon of yours I love :).

As Darrell said on the last page, Arwen is the perfect counter to balance Aragorn, for the same reasons as he mentioned.

Frodo's-Guide, one reason that Éowyn would not have been as well suited for Aragorn as Arwen was is that Aragorn would have outlived her. He lived for another 123 years after he was crowned. I highly doubt Éowyn would have lived that long. At this point, I don't remember if Tolkien included the date of her death in the Appendices, but I seem to remember that Éomer was rather long-lived for a Rohirrim, so she probably didn't even live as long as he did.

So far as I know, Éomer and Éowyn were not descended from Númenoréans--they were Rohirrim, pure-blooded. But again, that's simply from what I know. I've never read anything to imply that they weren't, though we don't have their entire family tree.

Anyway...I think Arwen and Aragorn were perfect for each other. Arwen may not appear so, since she isn't fighting like Eowyn...but she is a very strong person.
And yeah, of course, Eowyn is brave, and strong. But Aragorn is also very wise. As is Arwen, of course, being an elf. Eowyn doesn't really show any wisdom, not that I'm saying she's dumb, but she's different!
I like Eowyn, but Aragorn and Arwen are just perfect for each other.

Looks like you two had quite the conversation, Aerandir and Aerlinn :). I agree with what both of you said. I had been wondering about the age difference between Eowyn and Aragorn. Thanks for pointing that out :)!

Plus Eowyn and Aragorn would not be happy together since Eowyn only loves Warrioir Aragorn.

I never thought of that, Lady Raine of the Rangers. That's a good point. Also, she didn't know ARagorn as well as Arwen did. She hadn't known him for long enough.
