Anyway, it's a nice little thought that Haldir might not have died...after all we didn't see how bad his injury was.

I also have read that elves die with closed eyes-can't remember where though...it is a nice thought that after all he might only have been injured....

Yeah, so have I! Somehow I know it's accurate, but I honestly can't tell you where it's written in any of the books... *skips off to ask the hardcore purists who've memorised every word*

Really? Hmm...I have always asumed that their eyes were always open. Sleeping and dead. I've never seen an Elf with eyes closed for anything, except for when they blink, that's it.
Edit: I lied. That goes for hugging too it seems. I just only looked down at my bottom banner and can see Haldir's eyes are closed.

Ooooh. My turn to say something.
At least so far as I remember (and perhaps I'm just being vain, but I tend to think I'd remember something like that), none of the 3 LotR books, The Silmarillion, or The Unfinished Tales say anything about Elves only closing their eyes when they're mortally injured or dead.
The one thing that I can think of right now to support that is this quote:
The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, Book III, Chapter II, The Riders of Rohan, page 432 wrote: Legolas already lay motionless, his fair hands folded upon his breast, his eyes unclosed, blending living night and deep dream, as is the way of the Elves.
I never really thought about whether or not Elves blink or close their eyes if they're not mortally injured or dead, but I had (and still do) think that they don't sleep in the same way that humans do, though that's not really up for argument, since I think Tolkien states it pretty clearly. I always imagined them being able to 'rest' while still being aware of what was going on around them, and able to interact in a limited way. However, there isn't really anything to back up the latter part.

I loooooooove that part! But it's true, that doesn't imply that Elves NEVER blink or close their eyes.

Well they don't sleep, I don't think. Don't they go into a sub-conscious mode?

^ Isn't that what sleep is?
Haha. Okay, that's funny. I thought something seemed a little off...

I believe it is just a sub-conscious mode. Everyone needs sleep, even Elves. It is a way of resting the body. Their sleep is just nothing like a mortal's sleep.

There's a part in TTT that explains it...I don't remember exactly what it said, I read it over a year ago. I'll go have a look.

^ They do sleep, as I had stated before, everyone needs sleep.

They do blink. I am sure of that. I really haven't seen no Elf blink and close their eyes except for Haldir and Arwen.

^But that's just the film... they have to blink in the film, because the actors are humans not elves.. I don't know about what it says in the book though, I've read somewhere that it states in one of Tolkien's million books that Elves don't blink. I'll try finding out where it says that though, I'm not entirely sure myself...
Elves definitely do sleep though... they sleep with their eyes open, haha.

I'm going to have to dig out my books again, LOL! They're in my attic right now, much to my chagrin. I didn't have enough space in my room.
