kso. I'm a bit overwhelmed by GIMP right now. I'm totally excited that i got it on the compy sucessfully but now... i'm in need of help. The layer thing is kindof confusing (And i know its because i've lived in the stone age for so long with just plain old Paint >.<)

Could someone help me out here? I'm just wanting to make a banner for my sister (She has a Ryan Scheckler fansite) and I have an image that i think she'll like... i'm just not getting the hang of things yet...^^

Thank you in advance!

I'd suggest going to the club section- there's a GIMP users club there, with some good tutorials. I haven't used paint for banners, so I don't know the differences beween the two. If I think of a good way to explain it, I'll let you know!

Thanks Elenya! I'll swing by there...^^

Also anyone know of some good GIMP tutorial sites? Some of them are just to... hard. ^^ I guess its because GIMP is kinda confusing and intimidating to me.... </3

Try searching LiveJournal for tutorials..I think I've found a few good gimp ones.Gimp is a tough program, but once you get the hang of it,it gives pretty good results.Try adding layers and fading to blend(click the layers tab at top left),or blend the way a photoshop tutorial says to blend..it works! :)

The club isn't much help...I posted a week or so ago looking for help and haven't gotten anything yet...but don't let that stop you! Maybe they'll respond to you and it will help us both! (I don't understand the layering thing either...)

If you need help finding them,dafont.com has tons, and here has great LOTRs ones. Also googling what your looking for brings up great ones.
Anyway, heres how you get them into gimp:
download the font you want

unzip it (click on it,extract files). To do this, you will need an unzipping program.7-Zip is free, and a download,or you may already have win-zip on your computer.

Now double click the unzipped file, and click cut.

Go to your control panel, and the folder called "fonts".

click paste.

In the fonts folder,at the top, click "install new fonts",click the fonts you just downloaded, and click OK.

Now close that down, open up gimp, and your text, and check to make sure the fonts have been installed.Arwen Undomiel has instructions under Media-Fonts,if you need pictures.

This also works for downloading brushes, but they have to be in gbr format (try deviant art-gimp brushes)...This is how I install brushes, and fonts.

Hope this helps,and if it doesn't work,post again,and I'll try to help. :)

Okay. I know how to do all of that. But when GIMP opens up it doesnt "Grab", for lack of a better word, the new fonts. I download them to windows>fonts and they show up there but then when i go to open up GIMP its just the old ones.

The only time its ever gotten my downloaded fonts is when i first got it (GIMP) and those are the ones i'm stuck with now... any advice? :[

Hmmmm..Try refreshing gimp (I can't remember what its called, but its at the top, like refresh scripts,or something like that)...
If that doesn't work, maybe the files weren't really unzipped (Do they have a gold line like thing across the files. If they are a square that says TT,they're unzipped)....
Also,read what A.U. under Media says..its a big help....
Try checking that, and if it doesn't work, post again, and I'll try to help on Friday...:)
