Although the strength of the ring grew too much for him in the end, and he succumed to the corruption, he ulitimatley triumphed.

When his finger was bitten off, Frodo wrestled Gollum for the ring, and through his courage, he pushed Gollum off into the firey chasms.

Interesting point Frodos-Guide. But that is the film verison you described. In the Book, Gollum starts dancing with joy and 'mistakenly' slips and falls into the chasm.

Also, if you look at the ROTK:EE documentaries, there is a documentary that says that they didn't want Frodo to look as if he was a murderer (i.e. pushing Gollum into the chasm), but more as if he was trying to regain the ring for himself and making Gollum accidentally fall into the chasm.

This is an interesting question.

In the sense that the Ring had been carried to the cracks of Mount Doom he had succeeded in his quest. Though he had been helped throughout the quest he had been responsible for what would happen. Thus it had been his quest to succeed or not to succeed on. However this raises the question had his quest been to bring the Ring to Mount Doom or to destroy the Ring at Mount Doom? I have asked this question and I have not found the answer. Galadriel does say that had he not found a way no one would be able to, but does that mean that Frodo need only to find a way or to actually destroy it?

In the sense of him individually succeeding, I would not say that he had. In the end he had succombed to the power of the Ring and had it not been for certain circumstances it would not have been destroyed with the exception of Sam destroying the Ring, which I believe he would have because he had not been as affected by it as Frodo. Though it is admirable that Frodo lasted as long as he did against its power.

So in short... In terms of the quest it is a question of whether or not it had been his mission to find a way to Mount Doom so that the Ring could be destroyed or to destroy the Ring himself, to say whether or not he had been successful definitely. In terms of individually, in my opinion, he did not succced over the power of the Ring.

a while back i saw on this show about antique stuff, there was a letter written by Tolkien in reply to a fan's questions.i think the question was something along the lines of 'why couldnt Frodo destroy the ring at Mount Doom?' and Tolkien wrote that since the ring had so much corrupting power it would be physically impossible for anyone who had carried the ring for so long to find the will to destroy it themselves.
