I agree. Eowyn is an oustanding role model for feminists everywhere.

Eowyn, to me, represents the person who everyone expects to do one thing : be a woman. She's not expected, or wanted, to fight. Eowyn is supposed to be obedient, do what she's told. Eowyn is the polar opposite of that.

I agree she is expected to support her superiors, the men. Uphold the household, while the men are gone. She is to lead the people, while the men are away, but is not expected to do any fighting.
To a certain level she resents this, she feels like she is being suppressed. She seeks to show her abilities.

Exactly! That's precisely what I'm trying to say.

Hehe we have an understanding. So even though Eowyn is an amazing character, Arwen is still better suited for one another, they have sacrificed so much to be together and that in a sense is love in its purist form.

I think Arwen and Aragorn are best suited for one another... can't think of any reasoning to that, admittedly, but... yes.
Someone must have mentioned it somewhere in this thread already, but Tolkien originally intended for Aragorn to marry Eowyn and not Arwen... what a different outcome that would have been

I don't think it would have been true happiness. They would be happy for a while but not for long I think.

Are you serious? I've never heard that. I don't think anyone has mentioned that before.

I read it in one of the books... I think it was The Treason of Isengard?
But yeah, it would seem as though he married Eowyn because he felt sorry for her...

Yeah you should!
It's one of my favourites, because it contains notes of what Tolkien intended LotR to be like... (for example, "Haldir" was originally named "Hathaldir" )
Vol. VII

Do you know where I could get my hands on one? I haven't seen any in book stores.
Sorry to get off topic...

You can order it off Amazon or something similar... they always have plenty, the bookstores in my city don't carry any anymore either.
But apparently Aragorn loved Eowyn too, originally.

I don't order things off the Internet, so I guess I'm out of luck. Ah, well. No matter. Thanks for the information!
