I decided to start a topic for these genres just because...
I suck at getting a conversation going, so how bout listing your 10 favourite bands?
Mine change frequently but right now mine would be:
1. Ensiferum
2. Finntroll
3. Eluveitie
5. Turisas
6. Moonsorrow
7. Wintersun
8. Fejd
9. Falkenbach
10. Thyrfing
Also...
Posted on Eluveitie's official website:
" After a long time playing together with us, Sevan (flute, whistles, bagpipes) and Rafi (bass) decided to leave Eluveitie. Both of them came to this desicion due to personal reasons. Both, Sevan and Rafi, were longtime members. Sevan was with Eluveitie from the very beginning on. So their step was kind of a shock for us. Yet we also understand and accept their desicion. We won't forget the years we spent together and we wish Sevan and Rafi all the very best on their future musical as well as personal ways! "Thank you both for your dedication and for the time we spent together the last four years! Take care & horns raised!!!
Sevan and Rafi will still play with us the next couple of shows! But of course we're now looking for worthy replacements - a bass player and a multi-instrumentalist well playing bagpipes (Gaita and similar), tin and low whistles and eventually Irish flute. If you're interested in playing in Eluveitie, then click here!"
This REALLY sucks... they didn't come here for Paganfest because of some border issue, and now we won't even get to see the twins... life isn't fair

Interesting! I've heard of folk metal, but I've never really looked into it. Do you suggest any songs in particular that I should listen to, to better understand Folk Metal?

I love Folk Metal. I can't possibly rank the bands I like because they're all so fantastic but the bands I enjoy the most are Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Turisas, Ensiferum, Otyg, Moonsorrow, Alestorm, Falconer... and I'm forgetting tons right now.

It'd be criminal if I didn't post on here
My absolute favourite Folk metal band is Korpiklaani, hell there my fave band after Nightwish regardless of sub-genre.
Other bands I like(in no particular order):
Finntroll
Turisas
Alestorm
Týr
Cruachan
Moonsorrow
Ensiferum
Lumsk
Midnattsol (they say they're folk and who'd know better than the band?)
Skyclad
Windir
Thyrfing
Shaman
Wintersun
Vintersorg
Skyforger
Falconer
Elvenking
more than 10...my bad?

Thanks for posting those Haldir! I'm listening to them now!
So far, I like Turisas, I like their fiddling...It's very reminiscent of Hungarian folk music But, their lilting singing reminds me of some Celtic music I can't believe I'm analyzing it this much I like it...
I have to admit I usually don't listen to much metal, except for at work when they put on Slayer...
However, Arweb did send me quite a bit of Nightwish, in hopes I would become thoroughly in love with it like her

I listen to folk when I'm not listening to doom
Sometimes I hate it to the core, sometimes I fangirl madly over Turisas, Ensiferum (oh, Jari. I shall see thee in one month.), Korpiklaani. And of course I love the so-called first folk metal album evaaarrr - Bathory's Blood on Ice (RIP Quorthon )
They're more like medieval rock, but I love In Extremo. Their rendition of Ave Maria is stunning... ( see this)
Oh, and folk metal bands always make the best moshpits at gigs.

Skyclad released there first album in 1991, a good 5 years before Blood on Ice
I'd say Folk metal bands make the funnest pits, not necessarily the best. But that's all down to interpretation on what 'best' is.

I can't come up with 10. My music program defies me when I'm trying to download obscure (relatively) metal bands. I'll list a few that I've managed to procure.
Elvenking (woot)
Ensiferum (another woot)
Falconer (a third woot)
Turisas
Korpiklaani
Alestorm
NIGHTWISH... pwns all. hey, some of their songs can be classed as folk metal.
I get most of these bands from eavesdropping on you guys.

Yeah Turisas is something... I love their violin
Oh Nightwish is very good... I do prefer Tarja's singing over Anette's though. Oh well

Nightwish are the awesome of all awesome, but imo comparing Anette and Tarja is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are very good, but very different.

Yeah I guess you're right... but I preferred Tarja's opera voice.

I can't choose. I won't choose.
Anette has a more bubbly, affable, friendly personality. So I warmed up to her very quickly. Tarja for me is every inch the Diva.
