I was rereading FotR and I came across this line, "There is a connexion with Bilbo's old adventures..." Shouldn't it be connection? Or is connexion the way they said it in Tolkien's time? :confuzzled:

Don't the Brits spell it with an "x"? It's a word though, but I think it's one of those words that kinda gets shoved around and changed over time...

I was never aware we Brits spelt it with an X. Ever. But reading some Jane Austen books the spelling of words over time has changed, so I suppose there is a chance connection has also changed. Although I don't remember seeing X's in my copy.

I don't either. However, I do remember seeing "wagon" as "waggon" in my 1950s copy for FotR. I suppose that's just an example of the English language evolving over time. :)

Hey, interesting question!

Wikipedia claims
Quote:
Connexion is the original and variant spelling of "connection", common until at least the 18th century, and still used in Britain well into the 21st century. The Oxford English dictionary lists it as an acceptable spelling to this day.

Dictionary.com says:

Quote:
connexion- noun British. Connection. Related forms: connexional, adjective.

The Oxford Shorter English Dictionary says "See connection"

That's all I could find for now.

My dictionary agrees with you.

It really is interesting reading really old books and thinking how strange they were too spell the way they did, I'm sure they'd feel the same toward us.

Yeah...makes me think how Shakespeare would feel reading some modern literature.

'Conexion' bothers me, though. It makes me want to say it like 'con-EKS-in.' Not 'con-EKSH-in.'

Maybe we could re-write LotR and spell everything phonetically. XD
