The Official Hobbit Fanfiction Contest: a part of this year's Return of the Rings summer activities.

Yay, it's here!! *shower of confetti*

* The theme is Tolkien's The Hobbit.
* Write a fanfiction that takes place in the time around The Hobbit with one or more characters from the book.
* Try to land your story around 1000-2000 words so the entries will be about the same length - hopefully, it should give them a more equal chance in the poll.
* The entry must be an original piece written for this contest.
* Deadline for the contest is July 23rd and you must PM your entry to <a href="http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/forum/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=74" target="blank">Eä</a>.

I've been wondering if I should join or not, but I think I'll give it a try.. I might pull out of the contest, though if it doesn't work out.

*goes to re-read the Hobbit*

I know the contest isn't easy and you've got quite a short time to write it because of the coordination with the other contests, but I can push the deadline a little bit forward to suit everybody.
Perhaps I should modify the requirements to be more like a short essay. I mean the writing contests aren't meant to be long assignments but more of a little thing to have fun with over summer so don't fret!

*cries* Don't change it! It'll make it harder for me! I'm good with the requirements, it's just that I haven't read the Hobbit in a while and I forget a lot of what happened.

I agree; I'm actually planning on entering this, assuming the guidelines stay the same. It's just that I work Mon-Fri and come home exhausted, so I'm usually not able to do any writing until Saturday. Two thousand words is nothing for me; it's really only a matter of having the energy.

I also know that personally, I usually don't commit to a contest until I have my entry ready, especially when it's writing, as my muse is quite fickle. It may be that several others are planning on joining as well and simply haven't made that decision public yet.

*nodnod* Alright I see what you're both saying. I'll let the requirements stay as they are - people are welcome to make their own interpretation of them according to artistic freedom!

I know 2000 words aren't much once you get into the writing but I wasn't sure people would have the time to write more than that and I thought it would be a good length to read for the people who will be voting.

As I said, I'm willing to push the due date and you're welcome to give other suggestions if you want to. These summer activities are for the members so they should be fun for everyone to participate in.

The contest has been open for five days now and so far I've gotten only one entry and two 'maybe'. So far it doesn't look much like a contest...

*posts* I'm thinking about entering, but I shall be gone from the 22nd through the 28th, so time is an issue for me. I'm good with the requirements. My main thing, actually, is if I get an inspiration. I'll go skim through The Hobbit and see if my muse decides to be nice to me. lol
