When any of you ever watch the film with other people who say they love LotR... doesn't it annoy you when they ask the most stupidest questions or if they make the stupidest comments? Like, asking a question to understand what's happening is one thing... but a lot of questions really bug me. Or comments.
When I was watching RotK with my class.
Girl: (points to the fell beasts and trolls with siege towers) What are those?
Girl #2: Oh (casually) those are the dragons. And those are the ogres with the catapults.
Me: No, those are actually Winged Beasts of the Nazgûl, and those are the Olog-hai with siege towers. If you don't know, then just say so.
Later on...
(the Eagles show up)
Girl: Why couldn't the Eagles have flown Frodo over to Mt. Doom in the first place... that would have been so easy and it would have saved so much trouble.
Me: You like LotR, don't you?
Girl: Yes...
Me: If the Eagles could fly Frodo to Mt. Doom so easily, it wouldn't be a very good story.
Girl: I guess.
Me: Just shut up and watch the movie.
....
and people who pretend to know what they're talking about...
Haldir wrote: Ah... I dislike Melkor. Since you've passed the part about the creation of the Orcs, what do you think about it? Some say that the Orcs were made from tortured and mutilated Elves and some say that they were created simply in mockery, but not physically by them. I've had this discussion with nearly everyone I know who has read at the very least up unto that part. What do you think of Morgoth's race? Haldir's friend wrote: I guess its okay...right cuz like he did needed an army for himself, wait in the book dosnt it just say that it was simply for the mockery that the orcs where crated?....or maybe I'm reading it wrong. But I really like some of the parts where you get to hear Morgoth talking, like even if he was part of the Valor I think its just fasanating how he came into an evil mind So far I think the book is really good and understandable, if only i wasn't a sleepy person =/....then maybe I would actually remember stuff. Oh and yesterday I was reading alot and now I'm at the part where Feanor created the Silmarils and Melkor as turned him agianst the Valors and he just left Fingolin in Araman and went to Middle-Earth. And they started to talk about the Dwarvas. Haldir wrote: It's okay??!?! So you think that it is perfectly fine for someone evil to go and enslave the Firstborn, and create foul and corrupted Orcs just because he needed an army? I definitely think otherwise.... our opinions on good and evil definitely oppose each others'. And shut up, you're rambling.
I'm definitely not saying that I know every little detail about Tolkien's books (there is A LOT that I don't know actually), but people who pretend to know more than they do just annoy me!
Anyone else share that feeling?

^ I definitely agree with you,Haldir!
Specially the part about the movies.
I watched only one time the "Lord of the Rings" with a friend and I won't do it with her again.
The whole time she was irrating me,'cuz I'm a Lotr fan.
That was so nasty from her.And I though she likes the movies...
Now she's reading the books(Lotr)
When I try to start a talk with her she always says:
Quote: I: What do you think about King Theoden? He's soo different in the book.
But she answers quickly Quote: She: I guess you're right.Do you want to go shopping now?
Elen looks like smacked with a fish-

What the heck... that's so off-putting for a LotR fan! That is so rude of her!
I also have a friend who used to hate LotR so much... and then just SUDDENLY, she goes all obsessive, asks me to borrow all of my HoM-e books, says that she's in love with Aragorn... and then Fingolfin. And she said like "Oh, I love Elves... they're my favourite race because they did the MOST!", after only reading half of the Silmarillion! How can she possibly decide that "they did the most" after only reading about the First Age? And of course I declined her request to borrow my books... err, hello... I kind of cherish them too much to allow her to borrow them.
Then she goes "Oh, I finished the Silmarillion, and it's my favourite now."... and when I start talking to her about Idríl and Tuor, she goes "Oh, I didn't read up to that part yet." Er... what?
Makes me wish that I knew you all in real life instead

I have a friend who loves the movies but when she tried to read the books she stopped halfway through TTT. I've told her to finish it...we'll see how that works out. (But then I also have a friend who got me into LOTR, and knows a lot about Tolkien and Middle-earth, so I just discuss things with her instead. )

@ Haldir:Wooow! If I knew her I'd never borrow her my books either *runs and locks away her precious Tolkien books*
I remember when I read "The Silmarillion" the same friend asked me to tell her the story.
I started but she walked away while I was talking.I of course shut up.When she remembered that I exist she asked:
"What we are talking about?"
Since then I'm talking about the books or the movies wit her.She just does not understand why I like them!!!
(N.B:Her mother is a Tolkien fan-she read all the books and watched the movies. But my friend-duhhhh)

I think the eragon fans are REALLY irritating though. They keep saying things like "Lotr is an Eragon copy!" While it's 50 years or so older. I mean....common' use that half braincell!
Oh dear... My sympathies.
The Eragon fans say WHAT?! I've never heard that! Not even from two friends who are huge Eragon fans! (because they know better... ) That's crazy!!! I...er...sorry. *steps off soapbox*

Well the HP fans say "Harry Potter is better than LotR!" Excuse me???? Er HP people, I didn't learn archery for no reason... don't you dare say that in my presence!!!
Actually, it's really only the HP fans - who think that Shakespeare is a foreign language - that say that. Lack of intelligence. Not the fans on A-U of course... I mean like the half-illiterate kids that are flunking English.fans

I think that Lotr is much different from Harry Potter.
I can't explain exactly why but I feel the problems in Lotr closer to me then those in HP(I mean no offense HP-fans)

My friend used to say that she was obsessed with lotr. She first watched to movies a year ago, went absolutly obsessed, and then started the books. She got 4 chapters into fotr, and declared that Tolkien in a poor writer, who can only write boring material, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But HP! Now, there's some quality work there; well writen (meaning "it's" excting). And there I was like:
She still claimed to be a lotr fan, because she liked the movies. Well, that lasted about 6 months, and then she moved on to a new thing. "Life's too short to be stuck up in the same rut", she told me. "Life's too short to be obsessed with everything", was my retort. But she's only obsessed with things that are "in" now. And lotr, "That's so 2003!".
But dispite all this, she'll still atempts to argue with me about lotr matters. Who's better; Boromir or Faramir? Is Denethor all evil? Is Frodo the cruellest being ever to live? And so on. She drives me to the breaking point.
*End of rant*

tee hee. I'm getting glad TLotR isn't popular at my new school. To each's own, I suppose, but at least there aren't TLotR-fan posers.

TheThain: I pity you immensely... What a horrid attitude!
Princess: Lucky... one of my ex-friends is a LotR-fan poser. She used to hate LotR SO much... like, she thought it was so wordy and ridiculous, and that it was too difficult to attempt. According to everyone I know, she's probably just acting that way in attempt to win back my friendship, but if she hasn't yet noticed... it's working the opposite way. She gets SO many of her facts wrong... and she's seriously nearly half illiterate. Like, her grammar, spelling and vocabulary are SO horrendous, one would think that she failed English. But then! she read the Silmarillion ONCE and announced it to me. So I asked her, "oh, did you understand it?" and she replied, "I understood it COMPLETELY... it's SO good!!!" I don't think many intelligent people understand it completely after reading it for the first time... and a linguistically-challenged girl would?!?

My, that's...interesting. I'm very sorry, Haldir. (I know what you mean about the Sil, I had to reread it before I understood the majority of the stories!)

I sooo agree with what you guys have written.
I had a friend who claimed herself LotR obsessed, but she really only watched the movies, she never touched the books and she didn't really know what was going on in the story. All she cared about was the way Legolas looked. Luckily she doesn't call herself a fan anymore, but she isn't my friend anymore anyways. It's the same with other friends of mine.
Recently my little sister started reading LotR (she hasn't seen the movies so far) and she's almost finished FotR. So far she's quite good. She asks me questions, but not stupid questions. I don't know if she really understands the story though. I'll see when she's finished the whole trilogy. Before that I won't let her watch the movies.

Thanks, Haldir, and Ánië Súrion! It's so refreshing to be on this forum!
You post made me laugh, Haldir, because you used the word "horrid". I use that word from time to time. But when I said it once to my friend (the one who I was telling about) she stares at me, and then asks if that's a real word! I was like . Maybe that's why you can't understand lotr!
^Sorry! I made a mistake on that. Some one else said that!
