HOBBIT NEWS - Benedict Cumberbatch's Bit
In an interview with Telegraph Magazine, Benedict Cumberbatch, who will portray the Necromancer and Smaug, talked a little about his experience filming The Hobbit. He says he filmed mostly in isolation-- barely interacting with the other members of the cast-- against a green screen and wearing a motion capture suit and 'Aboriginal-like face paint.' I think my favorite part is when the article reports the 'undisguised glee' of Cumberbatch as he describes Smaug as 'a 400-year old fire-breathing worm who lives in the middle of a mountain on top of a pile of gold, who is three or four times bigger than the Empire State Building and can fly.'

The article is an extensive profile of Benedict, so if you're as much of a BC as I am, I highly recommend it. ;)

HOBBIT NEWS - The Hobbit to be shown in 48 fps only in select locations Warner Bros. is evidently so wary of how The Hobbit will be received in 48 frames-per-second that they've elected to show it that way only in select cities. Peter Jackson and James Cameron are among the directors that believe 48+ fps is the way of the future, insisting that it gives film a real-life feel. But even PJ admits that it takes some getting used to, and indeed, at the 10 minute Hobbit preview four months ago at CinemaCon the reviews were mixed. (The Comic-Con preview to fans was shown at the regular rate.) However, Variety reports that Warner Bros. is choosing the limited release in order to test the market, and if it's received well they will release it more widely.

HOBBIT NEWS - Third Hobbit Film Release Date
The release date for the just-announced third Hobbit film is projected to be summer 2014, a change from the usual winter releases of both LotR and the previous 'Hobbits'. (Luckily) the new film has not affected the current release dates of the first two Hobbit films, which are still slated for worldwide release on 14 December this year and 13 December next year.
