  • Attended Ivanhoe East Primary School and Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School in Melbourne

  • Along with her husband, became the co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company (STC), starting in January 2008. They will remain as directors until 2013

  • Her father Robert, was in the navy and met his wife June, when his ship USS Arneb docked in Melbourne

  • Joined the STC in 1993

  • Did a great amount of research before portraying Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator (2004) which included watching the actresses performances and reading everything that she could find about her. Lauren Bacall also proved to be a great source of information

  • Met her husband Andrew, a playwright and screenwriter, in 1996, while appearing in a production of The Seagull. Initially they disliked each other, but within a few weeks of their meeting, Andrew had proposed

  • Studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney

  • Was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal in the Queen's New Year Honours List in 2001, for her "services to acting and Australian society"
