Trivia:

  • Taught students acting at Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School and Whitireia's College of Performing Arts

  • In a scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) where his character, Snaga is decapitated by an Uruk-hai, and then the Uruk is in turn killed by a Rohan rider; he also plays the rider

  • In the theatre show Skin Tight which involved lots of martial arts and physical work, he once was knocked out and dislocated his arm while on stage

  • Began acting in the late 1980's. He originally trained as a physical education teacher at Otago University but swapped to an acting course and then went on to attend drama school

  • For the character of the orc Sharku in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, he would spend at least 6 hours in make-up, starting at 2am and it would then take 2 hours to remove

  • In June 2007, along with 14 other actors who worked on The Lord of the Rings he sued New Line Cinema in a dispute over merchandising royalties

  • Has two children. His son, Sadwyn appeared as Eldarion in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) and his other child, Riley played a young Hobbit

  • Purchased one of horses used in The Lord of the Rings. Sib, was mainly used in close-up scenes and was part of the Rohan Royal Guard. He is a thoroughbred chestnut gelding
