History:

Dwalin was born two years after the Dwarves were driven into exile by Smaug. He is a far relative of Thorin Oakenshield. Nothing is known about him before he joins the Company of Thorin Oakenshield to reclaim the Lonely Mountain in Erebor. As a part of the Company, he is the first to arrive at Bag End where he meets Bilbo Baggins. Upon his arrival he wears a golden belt and a dark green hood. He is one of the Dwarves that help Bilbo set the table for the dinner party. While the Dwarves are singing, Dwalin plays the viol.

When the Company starts their journey, Dwalin lends a spare hood and cloak to Bilbo. Not much is known of his deeds during the journey to Erebor, but upon arrival at the Lonely Mountain Dwalin is the first to suggest that Bilbo should start spying on the dragon Smaug.

Dwalin survives the Battle of the Five Armies and is still alive during the War of the Ring. He dies at the very high age of 340.
