History:

Thorin was the eldest son of Thráin II, son of Thrór, the King under the Mountain in Erebor, and a direct descendant of Durin. He was therefore accustomed to being treated with respect and would usually behave in line with his royal heritage.

He was driven into exile along with his surviving father and grandfather after Smaug attacked Erebor in TA 2770. When Thrór was killed in Moria, the Dwarves assembled for the Battle of Azanulbizar (Dimrill Dale in the Common Tongue). Thorin fought among them and used a tree branch to defend himself after his shield was broken, which gave him the epithetet “Oakenshield”. Thorin became King under the Mountain when his father died in the dungeons of Dol Guldur in TA 2850. He remained in exile in Eriador, always longing for his return to the Lonely Mountain in Erebor. An accidental meeting with Gandalf in TA 2941 lead to a visit to the Shire, where he convinced the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins to join him and his 12 companions on the Quest for the Mountain.

During the meeting in Bag End, Thorin received the map of the Lonely Mountain and the key to the secret passage into the Mountain from Gandalf, who had looked after it since Thráin II gave it to him. After an encounter with three trolls, Thorin took a sword from their cave. In Rivendell he learned the sword was named Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver. Elrond also noticed the moonletters on the map of the Lonely Mountain, speaking of the right time to open the secret passage.

While travelling through Mirkwood for the continuation of their journey, Thorin was the first of the group to be captured by the Woodelves of King Thranduil. They took away Orcrist, and Thorin was locked in one of their dungeons, refusing to say anything about their quest. He escaped with the help of Bilbo Baggins, and upon his arrival in Laketown he was welcomed by the people of the town as the returning King under the Mountain.

Once Smaug was shot by Bard the Bowman, Thorin and company barricaded themselves in the Mountain, refusing to share the treasure with the people of Laketown. He continued his search for the Arkenstone, which held more value to him than the entire treasure of Smaug, not knowing that Bilbo had already taken the gem for himself. He was furious when he found out Bilbo had handed the Arkenstone over to Bard and King Thranduil. He called Dain of the Ironhills to his aid for the pending war against the people of Laketown and the army of the Elvenking. Dain came to help him, but Thorin had to fight side by side with Men and Elves to defeat the Orcs and Wargs in the Battle of the Five Armies. During this battle Thorin was mortally wounded but he made peace with Bilbo before he died. Both the Arkenstone and his sword Orcrist were given back to him, and he was buried under the Mountain with the stone and the sword on his chest.
