Things I Wish I Knew by RinielAranel
Quote:
Hello all newbies! And/or oldies! I'm going to share 12 things that I wish I knew when I joined A-U.*

1. Just post! The Miscellaneous Randomness is a good place to get started. That's how you'll find a place at A-U.
2. NEVER try to read through the first 100 pages or so of a topic. I tried about twice and gave up on that. Just figure out where the discussion is now and join that.
3. It may seem hard to make friends, but it's not really hard! Don't actually try to chase after specific people to be your friend. Just be yourself and post where you feel like it. When you start talking a lot to someone you'll find a friend!
4. The best was to improve your graphics skills is to enter contests. Have fun! Don't worry about winning. You'll see a great improvement if you practice and play around.
5. I began to know a lot of people by their avatar, or graphics. Never do this!!! Graphics change periodically, and you'll be lost if you don't recognize the people! Discern users by their NAMES not their AVATARS!!!
6. Explore lots of places. A-U is so big, it's easy to skip over an interesting thread! Don't just visit one spot over and over. Look through a lot of different places. You'll discover new people and ideas!
7. Watch what you say. It's easy to lean one way or the other in debates, but it's sometimes best to use kinder words in expressing your feelings over certain people, characters, or ideas.
8. Remember: posts should count on quality not quantity! It's easy to fall into the race to reach a higher rank and compromise for short, useless posts. Don't do this! Enjoy your time in each rank; you'll reach the upper ones soon enough. Concentrate on the quality of your post.
9. THE A-U FAMILY TREE IS NOT A REAL FAMILY. (I thought this for a while and soon learned that I, and YOU! YES, YOU! could become a part of the family by simply joining in the miscellaneous randomness section. figure out how to join the imaginary families! it's fun and gives you a place at A-U.)
10. Follow the rules. Always. There's nothing stupider you can do than get yourself in trouble.
11. Use the smilies! It's what they're here for!
12. Remember: obsession is a good thing! A-U is a place where you can rant and go crazy about LotR, and non-LotR stuff too! We're here to have fun, so have fun!

I hope you enjoy your time here!

How to join an RPG by Luthien of Lorien
Quote:
It all depends on the rpg you want to join. Most will have the main storyline and member list on the very first post. Some that have been going on for a while will have left the original plot far behind, tho. The best way is to PM the person who started the thread, ask if they will accept a new RPer, and to give you an update on what had happened so far.

The easiest RPGs to join are the newest ones. But the general rule for joining any RP is simply to post saying that you wish to join. Someone will tell you yes or no. IF yes, then post the biography of the person you will be playing as.

I hope that answered your question! If not, PM me!

Being Recognized by Herenya
Quote:
It can sometimes be good to keep your banner, avatar etc consistant for a while, especially while other people are still getting to know you. Changing them, and the same goes for changing your name, can potentially mean people don't realise who you now are...
Of course, once you've been here a while, it is a slightly different story.

The Symbols in People’s Sigs by Ea
Quote:
The little signs some people put within brackets in their signatures indicate if they want to talk about their religion (which doesn't necessarily have to be Christian, but most likely) or pray for others.

Online Passwords by Queen of the Stars
Quote:
I decided to start this thread to give members helpful hints about how to create a safe password that computer hackers would find hard to crack.

Hint #1: Use a password that's unique to you. Example: your favorite number + your favorite color + your pet's name.

Hint #2: Change your password often. Computer hackers will find it very hard to know what password you're using at what time.

Hint #4: A long, confusing password does not always mean that it will make it harder for others to figure it out. You might want to use a short, simple password that would be so easy that computer hackers would not think of it, shuch as: 'hi' or 'me.'
That's all I can think of at the moment. If you have any other suggestions, feel free to post them!
Hint by Larael: think number+letter passwords are usually the best. For a while I had someone who knew the password for my email account and so I changed the password to a letter/number combo that only I would know.

One other way to prevent hacking is simple: Don't give away your password or hints about what it could be.

Common sense people...
Hint by Daughter of kings I read that a good way to do it is't by letters and numbers, but remember the shape on the keyboard. then you get a random pattern that you don't forge also, i know a friend of mine uses foreign words, becuase she stresses about having forgotten which one she used, but that might help against the dictionary thing...

Password Safety hint from They Grey Pilgrim
Quote:
Whoa! Be careful!

1. If you use something unique to you, someone who really wants to get in can get can find your info (which normally isn't that hard, depending on how careful you are). One of the first things legal safecrackers (the people the bank calls when someone forgot the combination, or went off on a trip, and they need the vault opened) look at are birthdays and phone numbers and things.

4. Hackers won't normally just be guessing and typing different passwords in. Normally they try something called a "dictionary attack" where they have a computer try all the words in a _LOOONG_ list of words. Chances are, if your password is in the dictionary, the hacker's computer will try it.

Long passwords are better. But don't let people know how long your password is. it's easier for a hacker to try every "word" from "AAAAA" to "ZZZZZ" than it is for them to have to try "A" to "ZZZZZ"
More advice:

Avoid sequences-- things like "abc123", "12345" -- these are common and also easy to check

Don't use real words

That said, it helps if your password is sort of pronounceable, because that makes it easier to remember without having to stick it to your monitor or under the keyboard.

Put numbers in, and mix them in.

Use symbols if you can.

Also, don't use passwords for mor than one thing. Otherwise a hacker only has to figure out one password (Maybe because they figure it out, or maybe because a website doesn't keep it safe, or whatever) and they know everything.

Different ones!
Otherwise a hacker can get into everything once they get into one thing. If they break into some site and get your password, then they just have to look at your email address, go to the webmail page, and they're into that, too... And so on.

If you feel you _really_ need to use the same password so you don't forget, then only use one password for things like forums and chats where it doesn't really matter if someone gets your password (worst case is they post spam messages all over or whatever and you need to email Arwen to explain and get your account unbanned.) (This wouldn't apply to Arwen, because if someone got her password they could do a lot more, so needs to be careful with her password.) And use a different password for each of the things that matter more (probably email, certainly your computer, DEFINETELY stuff like online banking).

The battle against allergies is like art, you're always looking for ways to win. That's why I often search on the Internet for the best cleaning products for allergies. And the last article that I found, I found very useful, and I just can not not not share with you. Everything is as informative and most importantly effective as possible.

Return of the Ring is a series of summer events for children and teenagers. Here you check this Landscaping ideas nz and get more new ways for landscape. The events include many activities that help people learn about the world and how they fit into it. They are designed to let children experience the things they learn, personally, rather than talk about them or read about them in books.

I can recommend a steam cleaner, a car upholstery cleaner machine. When you live with allergies, you have to adapt to some aspects of life differently. For example, you have to thoroughly clean everything to remove the irritant. Buying a steam cleaner has been the best decision of late.
