Post subject: | Translation into elvish |
I'm creating a new character for a role play and I need a name for him. I've got a first name but I need a title for him. I've got three ideas and I was wondering if someone could translate them. They are: Border Guard Western Guard Border Defender If you could give me all 3 three that would be great. I'll pick the one i like best and then post his bio in the new characters thread. Thanks beforehand. (btw Sindarin is preferrable) |

namarie I may be wrong, but by what I know of elvish, which isn't that great, doesn't dil mean friend or lover? Or am I wrong? maybe its in a different mode..... |

OK I think you're right : dil apparently means friend but at its origin the word 'friend' meant 'defender' or something like that. (I take the latin origin...). It was just an idea... You're really good in elvish!! |

That's a good theory. I can see the connection. You should get a gold star. But I don't have one so you can have this. enjoy |

Instead of 'Anunn', make it Nume, because that is 'West' in Sindarin. Forn, Harn, Rhun, Nume=North, South, East, West. |

Dûn is 'west' in Sindarin, and annun means "west, sunset' from Quenya andúnë. There's also annui 'western' and dúven 'western' (archaic). DragonFlame thinks that might be 'southern', but it's actually from *ndūmina corresponding with Quenya númë. So, for Western Guard, there's Dúvendirn, Annuidirn, Tirndúven, Annundirn, Tirnannun, etc. As for Border Guard, perhaps Tirdhrain, Raindirn, Glandirn, Tirngland, etc. and Bardhrain, Rainvarn, Glandvarn, Barngland, etc. for Border Protector. |
