Fantasy is described as never being possible, ever. But on the other hand, Sci-fi is described as being a possibility or a chance that it might happen. Now, LotR was written partly as a history.

Do you think that we should start considering LotR as being Sci-fi, rather than Fantasy. Because LotR could of/did happen.... what do you guys think?

I understand what you're saying, but for some funny reason I've got it in my head that Sci-Fi has to do with spaceships and aliens, even though I know that's not necessarily true. :P You make a good point though.

I second that :P

I always saw LotR as some sort of historical-medieval tale. Which I think it is :)

Iv seen many things in Sci-Fi films which are just as impossible than some things on LOTR, so I suppose it would fall under either category.

I agree with you Haldir. That's exactly the way I think as well.

I don't put LotR under fantasy, but I really don't think that is Si-Fi. Si-Fi is generaly what could happen in the future.

Well I don't see how LotR has anything to do with Science. Fiction, definitely.. but Science-fiction? So yes, Sci-fi is pretty much lasers and spaceships.

Well, the four elements of Sci Fi are:
1./ Human nature or society is depicted
2./ A seemingly scientific but NOT scientific idea is expressed and plays a strong part in the story
3./ Presents the strange and unusual
4./ Tells a good story/has an identifiable plotline
So I don't think LotR is Sci Fi. They say "magic" is a strong element of fantasy, and that makes LotR fantasy.

I've always just thought of it as fantasy/mythology. That's what Tolkien wanted it to be, after all.

^ Aye.

And, to me, anways, sci-fi always seems futuristic. Tolkien's works seem more of past, rather than future.

yeah exactly. Science fiction in my opinion is supposed to be in the future and LotR is in the past.

According to what are you saying that those are the four elements of Sci-Fi? I've never heard them stated clearly before.

Yeah... me neither. I thought "Science-Fiction" was pretty self-explanatory.
