So as said in the subject line, I'm a Rp dummie.. I really have no clue what it is except that you make up your character and participate in a story but for the rest I have no clue about rules or whatever. My main question was actually how to begin.. Those stories are often too complicated to get in at once so.. any advice ? :)

There is nothing too hard for you to understand. Just the basic things you might know. Yeah once a story was gone too fast and far away. That rpg became meaningless. So if you get in RPGs which was made a few posts, that would be an easy for you to participate in. About making up a character, there are templates usually given by the owner of RPG. You may fill that template out and make your entry to that RPG. About rules, there are lots of them everywhere. Like no power playing which means as long as it is not allowed you can not play someody's character in order to do what you think of. In short, do not try to play another player's character. Just concentrate on yours.

I hope that would be helpful to you.

Yes, thank you! :)

So at the beginning you'll get a thing for your character to fill out?

You'll have to fill out things called 'character bios' here is a sample format:

Name:
Age:
Hair colour
Eye colour:
Race (for lotr rpgs and such :-D ):
Appearance:
Weapons:
History/background:

Like that^^

Also, when talking out of character, otherwise known as OOC, put parenthesis around what you're saying out of charrie. :-D

Hope that helped.

And make sure you don't "godmod", which is making other characters do stuff, and if you're going to kill someone elses character, ask them first over a PM.

I find that with RPGs, if it looks like it already has a plot, don't do something like run into a camp screaming "The balrog is coming!" because guess what, that puts the person who created the RPG in an awkward spot. Try to go with the flow. Also, this is just a personal thing for LotR RPGs, but I try to stay as close to the formulas for races that Tolkien created, because it annoys me slightly when someone comes riding in on a dragon wearing a miniskirt and a halter top and sporting a bright pink spiky haircut who claims to be an elf and possesses the powers of telepathy, and control of the elements of light, air and water. If you know what I mean. If you're going to be an elf - be an elf, and if you like that character I described, then you should maybe consider not RPing on the LotR board with him or her ;)
I am waxing quite eloquent, aren't I? Just one more thing. If you're supposed to be an elf, for example, talk like one. Don't say things like, "Dude, the big tree guys are attacking, we should scram" because guess what...an elf would never say that...an elf might say, "The ents approach! I fear we may be hard pressed to hold our ground!" You see?

Hope I helped!
