Bombadil is not that strong and his old forest and house isn't safe enough to protect the ring from saruman and his milion orcs.
But im quite sure that he can protect it from gollum

Well I will use Elrond's words. If Tom had the One Ring he would probably put it somewhere and he would forgot it.

I personally think the ring would be safe...I mean, yes there is what elrond said...but also there is the fact that Tom (according to the Tolkien Reader) would have been the last person to live, if Middle Earth fell to ruin. I think If he got the consept of how important the ring was, that the ring would be very safe...if he did'nt I'm not really sure.

I agree. But Sauron would still probably have won even if the ring had never been found. Even if Tom could keep it safe until the end of time.
Did Sauron really need it? Only to take physical form, and to make defeating the world easier.

Tom would have lost it. He just can't keep track of things you know? One day Tom would think "Oops I knew I forgot something." Who knows what would happen after that. Maybe the barrow wights would get it. Isn't that a scary thought!

I see your point Sithiel, but you also have to keep in mind that Tom was not really a being living in the physical world. He was there, but he really wasn't a part of it. It's almost like he lives in his own world that he is master of. If he had the Ring it would not matter if he knew how important it was because he would feel that it didn't apply to him. The whole evil of Middle-Earth didn't really bother him or apply to him either. He just doesn't seem to physically be in Arda, which is why he would not give any care whatsoever about the Ring. It did not matter to him at all, so he would have probably lost it or eventually the Nazgul would have gotten to it.
