When the elves leave Middle-Earth...is it true that all of their wee cities and stuff like vanish! If so then that isnt very good at all. It means either there will be only a desolate land or that Middle-Earth will shrink. |

No, the elves built their cities and palaces with real materials, etc. So, no, they probably didn't just go Poof! ![]() The 3 elven rings were used for building and keeping or sustaining those places, however. So when they lost their power, that meant that the places built by them would be vulnerable to decay, just like any other place. Maybe that's what you're thinking of. |

I think the places didn't fade away or anything because long after elves had left Lothlorien, it was still there when Arwen gave her life away. So they couldn't exactly fade or disapper, could they? ![]() ![]() |

aww well im not too sure. Its just what someone said. Wouldnt they fade though...? I meen if the elves built them n all....wouldnt they have poured their magic into it and therefore as their magic levaes middle-earth, so too do the places they built?? |

The places are physical, not magical. That is a very important thing to realise. When the Elves are gone, the places will no longer be special. They will be subject to decay and wear just like everything else, and will eventually be no more than a pile of rubble or whatever. A ruin--a memory of what once was and is no more. |

oohh...yes i undertand that now.. That's such a shame. Why is it that elves have to leave Middle-Earth anyway? |

The Elves are immortal. They cannot die. They grow weary of Middle-earth after a while, in a way, they get bored. They get tired of living far away from the Valar, and constantly facing evil, etc. That is the main reason, I believe. Another reason would just be that they want to go back to Valinor or go to it for the first time. |

Perhaps it is because the world is changing and in this new world there is no place for the elves. I'd rather come up with a different explanation, but that seems to be what Tolkien was saying... ~Iri |

Another reason may be because Valinor is the most beautiful place imaginable. I mean, if you knew/had been to a place that was just so wonderful, wouldn't you want to go back there? The elves felt it calling to them, and wanted to go back. Also, it was in their blood. It's their true home, so something always seems to be missing until they go back. |

Agreed Nurrantiel. Perhaps it is merely the lure of the beautiful land... Elves seem to me like a race that greatly values beauty. ~Iri |

I agree with most of what's been said here... I think the Elves had to leave Middle Earth, as it says in the books, the new age was for the reign of men, the time of men. Their homes would not poof into air as a magic trick, but their woods which bloomed and grew filled with beauty all year, would be abandoned and fade into the woods of wild, therefore, their buildings would also crumble in time. I believe with the renewal of the Kingdom of Gondor and ties with the remnants of the Rangers, the Rohan and more... Men were well connected at last, their strength and numbers would grow, their cities would spread throughout the countryside, especially with the threat of Sauron gone. So, the Elves knew this world, which had already changed greatly in their time, would change more and more.... and they valued beauty, nature, space... and just as the world is in reality today, they knew I think, men would grow and spread into realms the elves once held dear. Also, as many mentioned,...I think they were tired and ached/longed for Valinor... but not bored... tired. Can you imagine the Elves being alive during both battles and evil times of Sauron? I think many of them had a sense of finality, relief that the battle was finally won....and deserved a time of peace and rest beyond the white towers. ~tin |

I agree with tindomerel not much else too say because everyone else has pretty much covered it all. I suppose it was just because after Sauron was gone the rings were gone so that's why they chose to leave then... it was probably a good point in time. (Talk about stating the obvious lol). And I'm not all that farmiliar with the Silmarilion so I wouldn't know, but for the elder elves they probably missed all the land which used to be there (Gondolin and Doriath and all those places) and I think became par of, or the whole of Valinor or something... I'm not entirely clear on that XD, haven't read the whole book yet. |
