Actually Narya is supposed to belong to Cirdan but he gave it to Gandalf once he came to Middle-Earth thinking it would be much more useful and maybe safer with a Maia... My memories are old but I don't think I'm mistaking! ![]() |

Well Nenya was originally given to Galadriel, and she keeps it. Vilya, was originally given to Gil-Galad, but once he died it passed on to Elrond, who was Gil-Galad's best friend. And Narya was orignally given to Cirdan, but he didn't think of himself to be worthy to bear a ring of power,so he gave it to Gandalf. |

Cirdan knew Gandalf because Gandalf arrived in Middle-Earth at the Grey Havens. Cirdan is the shipmaster at the Grey Havens. He forsaw that Gandalf would need the ring, so he gave it to him. And passing the rings is like passing anything, as far as I know. The rings were given to the wisest, so they would know if someone came along who would deserve the rings more. |

Gil-Galad's ring did not pass to Elrond once he died. It was given to Elrond at the founding of Rivendell in the second age, before the last alliance in which Gil-galad fell. It as not that Cirdan thought himself unworthy to bear a ring of power, that most definately is not the reason he passed it to gandlaf. He gave it to Gandalf when he arrived in Middle-earth because he foresaw that Gandalf would have great need for it in his toils. He gave it to him to aid him in his struggles against the dark Lord Sauron. here is a link which helps explain it (read the introduction, and the first section): http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/g/gandalf.html |

Just a note: In actuality, Nenya was given to Galadriel, while both Vilya and Narya were given to Gil-galad. Narya he gave to Círdan, and then later on he gave Vilya to Elrond. When Gandalf arrived in Middle-earth, Círdan gave Narya to him. |

Um, I think it's either in the back of The Silmarillion or somewhere in The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth. As to why Gil-galad got two rings, he was the High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth, and next to Galadriel probably the most powerful, too. Círdan was of the Teleri, which may or may not have had anything to do with it (after all, Celebrimbor, who made the three rings, was also of the Noldor). |

The magical rings made by Celebrimbor and the Mírdain of Eregion in the middle years of the Second Age, made unwittingly under the secret guidance and tutelage of Sauron. Most famous among them were the Three Rings of the Elves, Narya, Nenya and Vilya, the Rings of Fire, Water and Air. These were the only three made outside the influence of Sauron, though they too fell under the power of his One Ring. After Sauron made his Ring, he invaded the lands of the Mírdain for the recovery of the Elven-rings. His armies overwhelmed Eregion, and he gathered most of the rings to himself, but four of the Great Rings were lost to him. One (later known as the Ring of Thrór) was held by Durin III, King of the impregnable Dwarf-city of Khazad-dûm in the Misty Mountains. Nenya the Ring of Water was carried eastward from Eregion by Galadriel, who crossed the mountains and settled in the land of Lórien. Narya and Vilya had already been sent into the north by Celebrimbor, and were in the safekeeping of High King Gil-galad. Galadriel kept her Elven-ring throughout the later years of the Second Age, and the duration of the Third. Gil-galad gave his rings to lords in his service - Narya to Círdan at the Grey Havens, and Vilya to Elrond, who used it to found a haven of his own against Sauron in the midst of Eriador - Imladris, that Men came to call Rivendell. Círdan, too, passed on his Ring, to a Grey stranger who sailed into his havens out of the West, who would come to be known in later legends as Mithrandir, or Gandalf. [FROM Encyclopedia of Arda] |

Thanks, theol, but I think the question was pretty much settled already. Thanks for proving the correct answer beyond doubt, though. |
