Last night I finished reading chapter 11 in TTT, and one line after Pippin had gazed into the Palantir stuck out at me. "Except for Merry who turned away." What are your thoughts on this?

That was the most suspenseful part of the entire trilogy.

Here's that line in context: 'I, I took the ball and looked at it,' stammered Pippin; 'and I saw things that frightened me. And I wanted to go away but I couldn't. And then he came and questioned me; and he looked at me, and, and that is all I can remember.' 'That won't do,' said Gandalf sternly. 'What did you see, and what did you say?' Pippin shut his eyes and shivered, but said nothing. They all stared at him in silence, except for Merry who turned away.
I think that was Merry doing one of two things: 1) He saw that Pippin was extremely frightened, respected that, and turned away to ease the pressure a bit. 2) He was disappointed in Pippin and showed that by turning away. Or it could be both at once.

I could see him being dissapointed.... Or perhaps he felt bad for him I am not sure.

..... or, perhaps Merry was frightened by Pippin's reaction to looking into the Palantír, and turned away to hide his fear from both Pippin and the others.

That is definitely possible! I never thought about the possibility that the problem was with Merry.... Thanks for that thought Shieldmaiden!

That line really shows how different Merry is from the others. While Pippin is drawn in by the Palantir, Merry has the strength to turn away . It's a small moment, but it says a lot about his character.
