Here's a rather odd question...

What, do you think, IS that stuff? Is it just spiked water from the Entwash? :P Or perhaps, is it made by use of (what we call ;)) Magic? :lost: How could they make it so that Merry and Pippin grow so much in so short a time?

...This might be interesting. :teehee:

Ent-draughts were brewed by the Ents from the waters of the mountain springs on Methedras. These springs were the source of the Entwash and the water had special properties. When Merry and Pippin drank from the Entwash and bathed their feet they felt refreshed and their wounds were healed.

When Treebeard brought Merry and Pippin to his home at Wellinghall on February 29, 3019, he gave them each a bowl of Ent-draught from a stone jar. The Hobbits found that it was similar to the water they had drunk from the Entwash, but it was even more invigorating. They felt its power coursing through their limbs and it felt like the hair on their heads was curling and growing. There was a taste or scent like a breeze from the woods. The next morning, Treebeard gave the Hobbits an Ent-draught from a different jar. This one was more filling and had an earthier, richer taste.

*nods and points above* yeah, what Faithless said ^^

I think it is just one of tjose things in Tolkiens world. Some places are 'magical' in our estimation. A similar sort of things occurred at the pools of Ivrin in Beleriand, when Turin was healed of his grief and madness after mistakenly killing his friend Beleg.

I never really thought about Ent draughts, but it's good to know the answer. I guess when you're contemplating all the big things, you forget the little pieces.

I think the Ent Draught has some kind of special [maybe magical] properties in it only native to the waters and soil of that land. Maybe it is why the Ents came to be. Of course we know the Elves taught the trees to talk, but maybe the Ent draught sustains that life in the trees, keeps them going.

Haha... maybe it's their equivalent of ale or wine! :P

But seriously, it has to have some kind of magical [or special] property in it that makes things grow that fast. Ooh, maybe it is the magic of the Elves that once taught the trees to talk. Maybe it was left there, and it found it's way into the streams and the soil to keep the Ents alive.

I'm not sure. I think it's not just water from the Entwash. Maybe the Ents added special herbs?
I think you're theory is interesting, Larael. :) I never thought about it that way. But I always thought the Ents were created by Yavanna and not by the power of the Elves.

Both interesting theroies, though I don't think Ents know how to make wine.

You are quite right Cuilwen, thank you for correcting me. I'm not sure how I got that mixed up. I do believe that the Elves taught the Ents to talk though. Am I correct in that?

^ psst. Celebrian. I hate to nag, but double posts are not allowed here, and the mods tend to get mad when people do it. You could have just included your second post in your first. Just thought I's give you a heads up.

Faithless explained the Ent Draughts pretty thoroughly above. They do have seemingly magical properties. I'm not entirely sure how they got said properties though. Perhaps Tolkien included it in another one of his tales. I'll have to look into that.
As for the Ents themselves, they were made in the beginning by Yavanna to guard the trees from the axes of the Dwarves. I'm not sure if the Elves taught them to talk or not, but I know that they could speak with the trees.
*sigh* I wish I was an Elf so I could talk to a tree. :)
