Post subject:  Member Award Suggestion

I noticed while voting for member awards earlier that a lot of people were nominated for several awards. Personally, I have nothing against this because it shows our appreciation for those certain members, but I would like to suggest something.

Maybe we could have a rule stating that a person can only be nominated for one award [instead of say, 3 awards], just to give others a chance.

Please consider this and I hope you like the idea. :)

I was throwing a similar idea around in my head, as well, Larael. I find nothing rude or insane about it. :P

While some members can be both amusing, a fangirl, and a Tolkien fan, for instance, I think giving other members a chance out weighs that.

^ yeah it quite often happens that one member wins more than one award. I'm not that keen on this either, I suppose next time we could PM members who've been nominated for more than one award and ask them which one they want to stand for. Then we wouldn't get complaints from people who thought they would have won if we'd put them down for their other catergory instead ;)

Another thing that I was thinking about for next time was that maybe members shouldn't be allowed to be nominated for an award they've won in the past.

I really like that idea Elanor!! Even though it might require extra work at least we'll always have someone new winning the awards. :)

Yes, this is an area that definately needs work. You see, one problem is that not everyone knows what area everyone else has nominated that person for.
So, one option would be, if y'all wouldn't mind, if a person was nominated for multiple awards the mods look through that person's posts and choose which one that person's best suited for. That's just one idea I'm going to throw out to y'all.
Other ideas, folks?

As for the if you've received an award before, how about either a 2x limit, such as often is with presidents, OR a once a year limit, since we're holding awards several times a year. This would involve making a list of people who could not be nominated each time.

I agree. It'll be more fair to everyone this way. :)

^i have notice that it is only those who did not get nominated that are complaining

That's not true, me, Haldir and Gwen have been nominated and think it would be a good idea.

Besides the fact that people have not been nominated does not make their opinions any less valuable.

I think it's a good idea, too, and I got nominated for an award, one I completely do not deserve *cough*notapuristwhatsoever*cough*

It simply levels the playing field a little bit. As Ivy said, it could be a bit like term limits, if we limited the number of times a member could be nominated for the same award. Or, I also like the idea that if a member is nominated for multiple awards, the mods will PM him/her and ask him/her which single award he or she would like to have as his or her nomination.

^Oh Arwen! The webmissy deserves an award every once in a while too. :)

I really like the idea of a 2 time limit, or maybe the once a year limit. That would be really nice and it would give others a chance at being nominated, ya know?

I also like Ivreniel's other idea about the mods kind of looking at that person's posts and choosing the award that best suits them to be nominated for.

I do think this will definitely cause an extra amount of effort but think of the variety of people we'll have who win the awards. :)

For this round, here's an idea: how about the person who wins has to accept the award? Thus, if they don't think they're really qualified (such as Arwen the Webmaster says she's NOT a Tolkien Purist!), they bow out and 2nd place wins it?

but what if say ... a person wins like three awards and he/she claimes them all?

wouldn't that put them in an awkward position? if they don't accept the award, they might be afraid of seeming ungrateful even if they didn't feel that they deserved it. if they do accept, they'll get the self-inflicted idea that they shouldn't accept because there might be someone else who deserves it more. I'm not forcing anything, but I think we should keep our current one the way it is and have new rules for the next.
