They're pictures of "random" things, I guess you could say
Images that aren't of celebrities or movies; pictures like what you have in your lovely Christmas banner ^^ 
For instance, a good stock image site is Stock Xchng

Pretty much Or if you need some 'filler' material...nature pictures are probably some of the most used stock images

Also, they can be used for brush and texture making (or as substitutes for them)
