Originality for one. We've all seen it before - the handsome/beautiful elven warrior with an unpronounceable name who also happens to be a whirlwind with blades. Aside from a certain elf in Elements, I've tried taking a break from the norm in the form of half-breeds/exiles/stereotypes I don't see often played.
The rper's skill and style is another one. I think any character can be interesting if portrayed in the right way. For example, you can have a unique character with an intricate background, but it won't be any good if that character is associated with mundane posts.
And thirdly, descriptive words in the posts that let the character's personality show. I've seen too many characters these days that blend right into the background because of their undefined personalities.

Okay. I'll try one of my characters in an RPG, when a suitable one comes up.

Hmm...interesting and original characters. I do definitely try to use original characters, though how successful I am you guys would have to tell me, since I am naturally biased.

As LDM said, the half-breeds/exiles can be interesting to play, and are not often played. On Artemis's "Quest for the Great Ones" RPG, I was going to play a half-breed/mutant creature, and then I noticed they were evil only. Sooooo....I went for an elf, so that I would still be playing a good character.

But I do get a lot of my ideas from books and movies, though I tend to warp them enough that only a small thread is traceable back to the source. My character on Artemis's RPG is based off of a Boundary Warden from Wizard's First Rule. Not specifically Dell Brandstone, but at the least his associates.

Very well said!!!
Actually I agree with your whole post, but especially this part of your post is what I've been trying to say more or less! Any character can be interesting, and in fact 'evil' characters might be easier to make interesting because they don't have to obey certain conformative norms! 'Good' characters can be made interesting as well, but usually it takes more work.
And descriptions, descriptions, descriptions!!!

^We're of the same mind. I get many of my character inspirations from computer games and video games these days. My lizardman shaman from the iksar shamans (sp?) in Everquest, and my Rothar half-breed from another guy in Dungeon Siege who happens to be named Lothar.

I agree with what you're all writing, the RPer's skill comes into it a lot.

I also tend to put little bits of lots of elements into my characters; my latest one is based off a mixture of different videogames, books and films, and still retains a unique front.
I would be interested in a Time Travel RP, I started one up a while back but it lost interest quickly.

Oooh, a Time Travel RP sounds awesome.

*says the time obsessed girl with 32 clocks in her room*

But aye, I agree with ye all... inspiration can come from anything and everything! Actually though, most of my charries are based off of people I know in real life. It's just... more fun and flexible that way. Plus, you never lack in trying to figure out their quirks/manner of speaking/appearance/etc...

I agree with all y'all. The RPer's skill is key. Especially when they are playing a very important or very mysterious character. Its always nice to have clues to who the person is, without saying it outright. I myself am VERY weak in this area, but I know several people around here who are very good at descriptive posts. (LDM... Aerandir... Meldawen... Raven....- the like. :P ) And, I wish I had a wider range of descriptive vocabulary and creativity... But sadly, no.

I, also, am no good at colorful descriptions. Not much good, leastways. It's an area that I'm definitely working on improving, to wit, copying other RPers who are good at it. :D

*Blushes* I'm afraid I'm not worthy to be classed with those three :) But thank you.

And I totally know what you mean, FM! Isn't it inspiring to RP with other people who are awesome at it? It makes the quality of my posts so much better!

Lol, Meldawen. I get a lot of my inspiration from reading posts by you, LDM, SG, Raven, Valera, and Curunir. It drives me to make my posts more descriptive and fleshed out. :)

And I copy the styles of my favorite authors, like Tolkien, Robert Jordan, Timothy Zahn, and Aaron Allston. I see how they describe things and try to incorporate it into my posts, though I don't think I do it very well (it doesn't really resemble their styles, so far as I can tell).

But just fyi, the members of this Guild are some of the best RPers I've "met" in my years of RPing (on 30-40 different forums). You guys are really good, for the most part, and getting better. Very fun to RP with, and you guys never seem to run out of ideas (which has been a problem on other forums...we've all run out of ideas).

I briefly entertained a notion of a time-travel RPG of sorts yesterday morning (just after I woke up), but I couldn't come up with an interesting, overall plot and the way the story could go, so I basically discarded the idea. But I have been mulling over another idea in my mind recently, which I plan on starting before too long. It should prove interesting, provided I can think of more little plot elements and all (I was in a very very similar one before, on a different forum, and I don't want this to feel like a copy of it).

...I must say, however, that they all drive me to better my roleplaying skills, especially my vocabulary of descriptive words. That's something I'm really trying to widen right now. I feel like I'm becoming..repetitive, at times.

I know the feeling. I get that all the time. It bothers me to know end when I feel like I don't use enough diversity in my word choice.

Anyways, I just started that RPG I mentioned in my last post. It's called "The Fourth Archway," and I would love it if you all joined. :)

Ah yes... I hate that. I think I'm getting a little too repetitive myself sometimes. But really my worst RPG fear is that I'm not being descriptive enough, or being one of those people who don't really do much exept annoy, bug, and in all otherwords drive other RPers crazy with horrid posts. *takes deap breath* ANYWAY, Your RPG is sounding really interesting, Aerandir... Once I get my head wrapped around all the deatails, anyway. ;)

Lol, I just haven't figured out how in the world you guys can manage to compress all the information about an RPG into such a (comparatively) small post. It amazes me.

Anyways, I was afraid the plot might be a little difficult to understand at first. If you want more details about anything, feel free to ask.

Oh, you can be sure I will :) I love random fantasy RPs, they're something new every time! I'll probably fire you off a million questions before I'm satisfied with my bio :P
