Lol, well I feel honoured then.

Hmm... difficult for me to think of villains in books .... the books I tend to read don't really have villains.

Ooh, does anyone here who has read "Sense and Sensibility" think of Willoughby as a villain?

Good question. I think he's a rogue but I don't think of him as villain. I actually feel a bit sorry for him... but then again I usually do for the "villain villains". You ask the same question of... er... the army dude from Pride and Prejudice?

lol like all the books i read have villains, or not-goody goody two shoes characters at least. I usually side with the power (or not, or just really smart and manipulative) ambitious, hot individuals.
:D
power and ambition top the list, hotness can differ. :D

You have a fair point. I guess you can not condemn Willoughby, because his intentions were quite honourable until money got in the way. As for Mr.Wickham [that would be the army dude :P] I don't know what to think of them. He lied and schemed in order to gain money and he wasn't any better with women. I think he dug himself into that hole without really intending to hurt anyone really.

Ah, thank you! *hands cookie* I think out of the two of them, you are right, Mr. Wickham was most probably the worst as I never got the impression he was a particularly nice man, whereas I don't think Willoughby was a bad man, some things had just gone wrong for him.

*munches cookie* Thanks. :) Other so-called "villains" are like that too I suppose. Sometimes they have no control over their lives and how they turn out. Take Voldemort for instance, was he born predispositioned toward evil? Or did later events in his life shape who he grows up to be?

Ah, no! *runs away from the theaoretical questions*

I'm not very good at these sort of things I'm afraid. If we find out why a person changed from good to bad, or what led them down the wrong path, then that's fine. But I can't really go into the details of was there always something there, to suggest the person was always going to end up bad ... I just confuse myself and everyone else. :P

Nah, I understand. As I'm not a lisensed psycologist I guess I don't really have the right to delve into people's minds like that. Anyway, the whole theme of HP is that our choices make us who we are, so if we go with that theory then that means Voldemort was not born evil. He just happened to be born into an environment and put into a situation that he couldn't control.

I don't think anyone is born evil really. It's all circumstances and enviroments I suppose.

Exactly what I was trying to say. It's the way your brought up I think: the environment you grow up in, who is around you, etc.

But then, if you think of someone like Darth Vader who was basically coerced into becoming evil in order to do something good, you can't blame his upbringing. He made the choice to turn against all he knew in order to chase a false hope.

Yeah, that's a good point about Darth Vader. There are, come to think of it, quite a few characters in films, where they are good people and have lived good lives but then they find themselves wrapped up in something bigger than they are, and then in turn, they find themselves doing things they wouldn't normally do and things that aren't deemed "good". Again, that has nothing to do with their upbringing.

Mhmm. It catches some of the best characters and then when they find themselves in too far, they can't get out again. It's like our dear Severus, he followed the wrong path to what he thought would bring him happiness.. unfortunately, it did just the opposite.
