Lol, Hans Zimmer plagiarises his own stuff a bit, too, though, so it's not like we can criticise people for it. A significant portion of "Hello Beastie" from Dead Man's Chest is almost note for note identical to a portion of "So You Think I'm Saxon?" from King Arthur. It drives me crazy every time I hear the music, but I survive.
Titanic I've never seen, but the music that I've heard from it has never much impressed me, probably because it's just over-popularised. <_< I think I kind of shut out any appreciation from it because I heard it too much.

Exactly why LotR is my favorite. Breaking of the Fellowship anyone? That song is THE single most beautiful song I've ever heard. All the different instruments, the tonalities, etc are just incredible! I could listen to it over and over and over again. And the Gondor Theme is just brilliant. Plus, the main Fellowship theme is so stirring, such as when it plays as they are traveling south or taking the Bridge of Khazad-dum. Ack, I could go on and on about the music for FotR alone, let alone The End of All Things in RotK.
As for fanfares or triumphant flourishes, I love Throne Room from Star Wars. Very brassy and awesome.
Oh Merides, yes! I love piano soundtracks. Pretty much any type of music with that classical 1800's feel is awesome.

I'm a sucker for sweeping movements, prolonged clear brass notes and the haunting melodies from a violin or chello. If there's a french horn, I'm in love. I played f. horn for three years and it is the most wonderful instrument to listen to. It has this clear ringing sound (Minas Tirith anyone?) that carries for centuries. Play a simple c on that instrument and it will carry the entire orchestra.
The Lord of the Rings is my favorite, simply because it fits. When I read the books, the music fits perfectly into it, not just the movies. I think you've achieved excellence when the score of a movie fits into the books. Howard also makes excellent use of not only the traditional symphony, but exotic instruments (Paths of the Dead, Gollum's theme etc. etc. etc.).

Oh, he's so amazing! He's done things like Con Air, Armageddon, Enemy of the State, Deep Blue Sea, Gone in 60 Seconds, Remember the Titans, Texas Rangers, National Treasure etc.
Some great scores composed by Trevor Rabin worth checking out:

Darky m'dear you just stabbed the truth right there. I think that thats one reason why I always listen to music and read - the two just seem to link somehow. Sometimes I look for music that fits the book Im reading so that when I re-listen to it I can re-read the book in a sense. And Lord of the Rings does that SO well - book and music.

I think it's hard for composers to not re-create and re-use previous themes if they've done several movies in a row. If a composer is re-using their own stuff, that's great. But if they're stealing it from another composer (without permission etc.), then I get angry.
You have to remember Aerandir, Klaus Badelt created all of the original themes for Pirates of the Caribbean, so any re-used themes that Zimmer used were the ones created by Klaus.

*tries to revive the club*
I've been away on vacation for two weeks and I see this thread has too
Let's get some conversations started. For instance, when did you all "discover" soundtracks (meaning when you started noticing the scores in the films you saw and really began to listen to them outside of the film itself)?
I've noticed film and TV scores since I was a child. The earliest one I can remember was the main theme tune from the BBC Chronicles of Narnia series that I would watch back in the late '80s. I remember going over to the piano and playing the tune by ear, despite only being around 5 or 6 years old. But when I really got into soundtracks was when I saw "The Secret Garden" (1993 version) for the first time in 1996. I went and bought the soundtrack (composed by Zbigniew Preisner) a few weeks later and from that moment on I was a movie score junkie! These days the score is usually the first thing I pay attention to when seeing a movie for the first time.
 I love scores!

It'd have to be LotR for me, so 2002. I was immediately entranced by Howard's themes. As soon as I could I went out and bought the FotR soundtrack, and then TTT and RotK as soon as they came out.
Later I bought the LotR music book for French Horn, it was lovely to play, and now sometimes I play the themes on the keyboard. If you transpose sometimes and switch it from piano to brass it sounds similar.
I loved the Lion King as a child, but I never owned the music to it.

I think it would be FotR for me, too. Awhile after I saw the movie, I realized I loved the music, and bought the soundtrack. After that, I started paying more attention to music in movies, and buying more soundtracks. Before FotR, I would think, "Hm, that's really nice music.", but I didn't get really think about buying the soundtracks.
I should get more soundtracks- I don't have nearly enough.

Well, musicals I noticed at a very young age, thanks to Disney and such. But actual scores...Star Wars. The first theme, May the Force Be With You, the Imperial March, the Throne Room. All the brass. I loved it from the beginning and the SW soundtracks are still some of my favorites.

First off..welcome back Wenchy! Missed ya
The big question...I think it may have been John Boorman's Excalibur. But I never really took a huge interest till Lord of the Rings. I get far too caught up in movies to always notice the music right away. Though strangely I think the music is partially responsible for that. It adds so much more to the scenes in the movie that it takes you away from RL.

I think that Disney really did it for me. As for actual scores, It must have been FotR. But I'd been paying attention to movie-music, as I called it when I was little . for much longer. There was a movie (whose name I cannot recall even if my life was at stake) that I can remember all the tunes to... But none of the words or anything. I must have been about six, and it always just stuck to my head... SW was a big one too. Very influential on me, in terms of caring.

Hi, everyone!
Um... I love the music by Harry Gregson-Williams, Howard Shore, Hanz Zimmer, and did I mention Harry Gregson-Williams? Didn't think so. Anyway my favorite sound track is "Kingdom of Heaven". I haven't seen the whole movie, just one scene. I heard the music and I fell in love. At least it's my favorite for now, it changes every month or so....

Hey... can I join?
Favorite soundtrack: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (ok, so there might be a slight Yo-Yo Ma obsession involved...)
Favorite composer: Hans Zimmer.
