I agree with Montana. There are so many things to take into account. The world is not clear cut.
A guess at the riddle: A bear came in and killed them...while being careful to keep them in thier chairs?...Ha!
Either that or both men were being executed via eletric chair in a cabin in the middle of the woods, and the electricity set of an explosion..somehow.

That's agood point! The robber told them to stay in thier chairs, but shot them anyway, and then he tore the house apart looking for valuables.
