I think it helps me to work out details in my mind, it helps me envision things, then put them down on paper. I think it also helps me write more realistic dialogue, and it helps me see how characters interact with each other.

It keeps your mind flexible. When writing you have the whole story in your head. You can write it down however you like and have the plot follow exactly what you want. But in an RP you don't have that. There are other people involved, so you have to be flexible and find a way to write for it.

it helps me a lot too! mainly with my huge plotting problems...
question: is it wrong to name a VERY proud male charrie "Madisen"?

*Shrugs* I'm really not the right person to ask, I give everyone weird names
I think RPing improves your writing in that you can write people with different personalities and figure out how they react to certain things. I tend to make all my characters have very similar personalities, so it helps me to interact with others who don't

yep, I agree with the flexibility, especially with the sudden plot twists and coalition of different personalities in a typical rpg. most of the complex characters in my story are from rpgs as well.

I think my writing and roleplaying skills feed off of each other. My writing benefits from roleplaying because I get more of a chance to feel out certain characters in different situations than I'd get in my stories (which is partly why I like to play canon characters; I typically try to play a character that I plan on writing something about). My roleplaying benefits from my writing because I'm used to having substance in whatever I write and keeping everything up to a certain standard.

For me, It helps me in flexiblity, and also in the sense that it gives me somewhere to learn new technics, how to write, styles really. And also how to make good and realistic plot twist. They also tend to give me big blue polka-dotted plot bunnies.

welcome, Anduril
I prefer my own characters to canon characters, though it is an enjoyable challenge to try to get their personalities right.

I definitely prefer RPing original characters instead of canon characters. If they're original, then you can do whatever you want to their personalities without really 'messing up.' If they're canon, then you have to be really careful to not do something that the characters wouldn't really do.
Have any of you guys ever wondered what it would be like, if you were Tolkien, or JK Rowling, or a Star Wars author, and you read all the RPGs and FanFiction dealing with worlds and characters that you thought up? Especially Tolkien. It's kind of funny to think about...I wonder what they would think of it.

Re Aerandir's post - I've often wondered what they think Particularly Rowling, who must receive millions of fanfics and laugh her head off at some of them. When I was more HP-obsessed I read tons of horrible fanfics

I think that Tolkien would sue personally. I don't know about Rowling, as I never read any HP novel or fanfic, or seen any of the movies. Never plan to either, they don't sound interesting, just kind of... repeditive.

I used to write fanfiction a few years back... interesting experience but didn't enjoy it overly much. Thing is too many fanfics these days are written by fangirls who write just to make a character fall in love with, preferably, their own female characters.
