hey!
i write fanfictions myself and there are a FEW of us with a little dignity!
i try to keep all fanfictions i write to a certain standard. i keep canon charries in character, and really try not to have mary sue/marty stu in my stories. almost always my OCs are careful balances that make him/her believeable.
unless it's supposed to be that way and i'm having a ball poking fun. then i go nuts. lol!

Oddly enough, I actually found one of that sort that was a good read. I believe it was actually on the A-U main site (has a bad memory). It was very decidedly a Mary-Sue fic, but the quality of the writing made up for it, in my opinion. It was an engaging plotline, very well-written dialogue, and not too insufferable of a Sue.
As much as I dislike Mary-Sues, I do make exceptions. There are characters in real fiction with Mary-Sue-like characteristics (Eowyn, anyone?), so as long as the creator has actually put some thought and planning into the character, a Mary-Sue can occasionally be tolerated. I have a character that is, by every possible definition of the word, a Mary-Sue (though I very, very rarely roleplay her). But, I've also had many people tell me how much they like that character because I actually took the time to think out explanations and details for her. She doesn't defy canon; she just fits in the gaps.
But aye, as a general rule, I dislike any kind of self-insertion plots.

Most of the time I am disgusted by Mary Sues. But there are those times where I am with my fellow LotR buddy. We make fun of them then. I also like Mary Sue Parodies where the author intentionaly cooks up a character so Mary sue that normally we all want to boil our eyeballs, then pretty much makes fun of the Mary Sue all through out the story.

Oh, I completely agree. I'm one of them.
But that's probably better discussed in the Writer's Club than the RPers Guild.

lol. There are some terrible fanfics out there... but there are some terribly good ones as well, although usually not written by jr/sr highschoolers. I admit to writing a few when I have time - feel free to follow the link in my sig and constructively abuse. One thing I do insist on is a degree of originality, which Mary Sue do not fill.
Re Aerandir's post, I'm sure some fanfics and charries would have authors turning in their graves. But there may be a select few that would have someone smacking their head and saying "why didn't I think of that?" We are, after all, only human.

Lol, I agree with that. I feel kind of bad for any authors who do read fanfics about their own stories, though, because the number of poorly done ones is far greater than the good ones.

Yeah, lol here is my fic rating system:
OMG! You need to find a publisher, NOW! (one in a million)
Wow! That was great! You should really think about investing in some writing courses! Great job! *thumbs up*
This is really great! There are a few typos, and some minor plot issues, but otherwise, you are on you way to a great writer!
Hm. It was ok, a little MSish for my liking... Along with typos. I advise a spellcheck, mabye a beta reader, and try and get rid of the MS symptoms.
Ok, this was VERY MSish, and you need to work on grammar and spelling. I don't think I can say anymore that you will not get from later reviewers.
O.o .... You're new here, arn't you?

Do you ever find that typos and spelling/grammar errors can completely ruin a story for you? I do. If I open a page and I can't even see where the first paragraph ends, I'm out of there before I even read it. It's very off-putting.

Same here... ugh. I am VERY guilty for typos, but not on that scale. *hugs spellcheck*

Oh, yes. typos in any kind of story or narrative tell me that the author hasn't seriously applied himself to making a story readable. Honest mistakes are understandable, but ruin the reading because the reader homes in on the errors, breaking the narrative flow.
I'm a grammar freak, as I think I've mentioned before.

grammar isn't to bad, it depends on where the author is from. you must keep in mind some authors are from other countries.
spelling is different, slightly. I can't stand it when people use the wrong word. (ex: there instead of their)
Formatting is intirely different. If it's not formatted at least a little bit and you can't see where one quote ends and another begins, I give up and don't read.
I also hate it when they use dashes or something instead of quotation marks. why they do that is beyond me.
