Yeah... I guess it hasn't been very active... I saw the club banner on Anie's signature... Thanks, Anie! Quote: Eowyn is such an inspiring character...to be more than people expected you to be, to rise above their expectations and be yourself with all that you've got. And to be able to change yourself. I think that is the most inspiring about Eowyn, not the Witchking scene, though that was very cool of course
She is an inspiring character. She's such a round, dynamic person... Yet the changes she makes are not spur o the moment type of things. They're deep, meaningful, and, in the case of the last one (:P), lasting.
She starts out as a spirited, trapped princess, worn down with grief and despair. She wants to rise up "about the mean things that crawl on the earth". And, when a chance comes along, she jumps for it. Hmmm... Do you think she wanted to die in battle...? "For death and glory?" Anyways, she finally meets Faramir, and changes yet again. She no longer wishes to be queen. Oh, her and Faramir, they're my favorite lotr couple! So sweet... I love the Hoises of Healing chapter, and the scene with them together in EE. Wish they had added more, though...
*Looks at what she just wrote* Well, that's my idea of the character... *Sighs* I love this... My family doesn't understand her... They're all Arwen lovers...

Darn those Arwen-lovers (no offence), but I don't think that Arwen is as strong as Eowyn. I know that she her own kind of strenth, and has a very strong will and all, but she doesn't risk her life (and limbs) in battle, proving to everyone she could do it.
(P.S. By the way, can I join)
He he he.

~Poison~Girl~ wrote: I love Arwen's story, thank you very much. She is a very strong person as well, though it might be harder to notice because of the way the movies portrayed her. Bah. "As Sauron's power grows, the Evenstar fades" <- rubbish. Pure PJ fantasy. Anyway...I love Luthien more. She shows much more initiative, braveness, rebellion etc. She doesn't actually wait until her daddy says it's ok if she can marry her one true love - she just runs away with him. And saves him over and over again. And makes the biggest sacrifice ever and is the first to do something that no one thought possible. ANYWAY. Yeah, I Love Eowyn too
I don't like how the movies wholly portray her. I think PJ might have been trying to make her more vulnerable than she really is. I can't really place my finger on it....Anyway, I remember reading in a biography of Tolkien that he had kind of "old victorian views" when it came to love, which made it somewhat difficult for him to express women, though his favorite story was that of Beren and Luthien (mine as well). I totally agree with you, because she is strong, and had the guts to do something that nobody had done before.
Before I go on too long of a rant, I just want to say thank you, and I'll be moving my issue over to the Silmarillion section!

Thank you... I requested it from Pandora, her banners are lovely
I've loved Eowyn for such a long time - she's so inspiring and strong, and such a cool role model!
Anyway, before I start rambling, I'll just say I am very glad to be member 36!

Lol, 36 is a lucky number!
Eowyn is for me the true spirit of LotR somehow, I immediately fell for her when I read the books, even before I watched the movies. She has such a love and passion in her for the people who mean everything to her... her family, or what's left of it, Aragorn, Merry, and finally Faramir... and she fought for them... adorable...

I totally agree.
I love reading parts of the book which include Eowyn. She's so spirited, strong and intelligent, yet she has another side which is so vulnerable and sad. She's such a real character, with real human qualities. I'm so glad she met Faramir; she got a happy ending! There's hope for us all.

Indeed, I believe she tries and hide her vulnerability behind acting strong, and the love for her people and for her family gives her the strength to face the Witchking and slay him I believe.
But still, so many people left her in her life, or hurt her, that she really deserved a quiet and loving, peaceful end, with Faramir in Ithilien. It fits just perfect for her.

I love the part when she kills the Witchking. Here's this massively evil creature wanting to destroy the world of Men - and there's Eowyn, a woman who no one thought could fight, and even if she could she could not take part in a battle. But she did. She had the power to make this monster actually scared, as it says in the book, a flicker of doubt appeared on his face when he realised that she had the chance to get rid of him.
Even though, in killing him, it really hurt her. And Aragorn said, in the chapter "The houses of healing", that she could not survive if she did not find something to wake up to - i.e., love - something that he could not give her. But she found Faramir.
I'm sorry, when I get to talking about Eowyn I go on for ages! It's such an interesting subject to discuss.

It's alright, happens to me as well from time to time.
Well, this scene truly is extraordinary, she has the courage to stand up against him to save Theoden, who is about to die in either case, winning or losing.
But exactly her vulnerability made it happen that the black breath had such an effect on her. With Theoden dead and Aragorn at the Black Gate, without hope for a future, how should she heal? I believe it was hope and love she needed, and Faramir gave this to her.

I was looking over "The Houses of Healing" chapter last night, when Eowyn gets healed, and it was very saddening when Eowyn told Gandalf that she might regain her health, but she wasn't sure about her hope. You really get a sense that she's completely hopeless now with her outlook on life, and only desired to be killed alongside her uncle.
Then I read "The Steward and the King" chapter straight afterwards, where she meets Faramir; they're so perfect for each other. They've both "passed under the wings of the shadow", or something like that. I love both those chapters.

Indeed, these are my favourite chapters as well, I don't know how often I read them already!
But exactly in these two chapters you also see how similar Faramir and Eowyn are, it's incredible. Both have experienced so much evil and still believe in the good in some way. Or well, Eowyn I believe stopped believing and hoping for some time, but it was Faramir who led her back and made her enjoy her life again. Incredible how well they fit together.

*Nods* You couldn't find a couple that went together as well as them.
I just finished watching The Two Towers this afternoon; you can really see just how like one another Eowyn and Faramir are, how they despair over their lives. It's brilliant watching the build-up to what will eventually lead them to be together.
