Yes, her mother could have been her inspiration to fight. Or one of her inspirations, anyway.

Well, sorry for the delay, I'm back from my holiday now again
And indeed, she could have influenced Eowyn in this direction quite much. But still there is a teacher missing

Hope you had a good holiday!
Maybe Eowyn taught herself, she could have been her own tutor.

A wonderful one!
Well, I believe we'll never be completely sure of this matter, but need to use our knowledge of Eowyn to try and figure the answer.

Her brother never seemed to encourage Eowyn's fighting, though. Or at least, never openly encouraged it.
This is indeed a mystery!

Sure, I will, Lady E!
And wow, what a gorgeous banner of Eowyn and Faramir you have!
Well, I agree with you, Goldleaf, it somehow appears more reasonable that Eomer did not encourage her fighting openly and therefor did not teach her.
I thought about Theodred, it seemed these three had a close bond in some way, so maybe he could have taught her? What do you think?

It could have been Theodred, yes - but then, he could have shared the same views as Eomer.
And lady_E, Eomer didn't really comment on her ability to fight, in the books anyway; and in the film he told her, in the extended version, that war was the province of men - i.e., women should stay out of battle.

Theodred was quite some years older than Eowyn and Eomer, if I remember correctly. On the one hand he could think the same way as Eomer, that the women's place is not war, and therefor not weapons either. On the other, as he's older he could have developed a different opinion, until he died. We never hear him on this topic.
Hmm... well, probably we never truly will know the answer. But well, what do you think about changing the topic?

Good point. Theodred could have adopted a more mature and understanding attitude towards Eowyn learning to fight, but we don't know.
I'll be thinking of more aspects of Eowyn's life to discuss *nods*

Well, it was just a small thought, there's a certain possibility to it, but just as you said... we have absolutely no proof.
And hmm... a new topic... seeing your Eowyn and Grima Banner, what about the relationship they shared? I hardly can remember what the books said about it, I have to admit.

^^
Well, I don't think Grima and Eowyn had a relationship as such - Grima's presence was in a way forced upon Eowyn when he came to Meduseld. I don't think that the book said much about it, apart from a small part when Gandalf tells Grima that too long has he haunted Eowyn's steps - which is where the bit with Eomer saying "too long have you watched my sister. Too long have you haunted her steps" in the film comes from.

There's an Eowyn fanclub around here, and I never noticed it until now?! Shame on me... I would like to join, please!
Ick, Eowyn and Grima Wormtongue? I can't feature that she would like Grima at all... he seems the opposite of all she stood for.
