Hmm, no William Hurt was definitely not right for Graham, he wouldn't've had that perfect humor that Mel did.

I was thinking blue as well.

For some reason, I just can't picture Mel as Edward Walker. Idk why- I guess William Hurt was just so good in the role, I can't see anyone else instead of him. lol

I was thinking Lucius' color might be red too, but I'm not sure. White is a good thought, too. Green was the only other thought I'd had. Not sure why. lol

I read a fanfic that had Edward's color being brown- I like that or blue.

@ Kit - No, I don't think he would have been. All M. Night's films are so well cast, it is hard to imagine anyone else playing their roles.

@ Elenya - I think Lucius' colous has to be something almost unique to him. Maybe that's one of the things that made her think of Lucius in that way. There could be different shades of brown and blue, but with white that's usually it.

Lol, lots of people seem to like blue or brown. :teehee:

Has anyone noticed the lack of people in the Village other than white people? Why do you think that is? They are living in a closed off village, away from the outside. They could have had lots of different races in their village, and it wouldn't have mattered to anyone, as they would have all been brought up equally and taught that everyone was the same.

Or would that have looked like M. Night was trying to get a message across when all he wanted was to make his film?

I hadn't thought about that before, but that's true, about the white people. Maybe M. Night wanted the focus of the movie to be on the power of love, and solely on that. It seems like, from what I remember anyway, he focuses strongly on one theme, instead of having several "lessons learned" by the end of the movie.

The fact that M. Night made the whole village white people is probably just because it would not have worked with the story-telling. In his storyboard he tries to thoroughly convince that this is a 19th century small village somewhere in the East America---if you had a black man in there, they would've had to treat him as a servant and slave to be convincing to the audience and with the entire purpose of the village, it would not have worked and it would a poor representation of a general "innocent" lesson from Shyamalan.

That is a very, very good point Kit. And that is most probably the reason why there are only white people there, as we the audience, would not "buy it" if there were black people and others of different races.

The entire setting in the Village is perfectly splendid down to its community. :) How large do you s'pose the village really is? At the beginning and at Kitty's wedding we see them set at tables, and my guess is around 100-150 people.

I would say about 100 yes. It is quite a large community, and I was watching the bit where they called a meeting and Alice was explaining about the fact they didn't think the creatures had been in their village, and in the crowd there were quite a lot of older people, middle aged people and thirty somethings. Which would prove that the Elders brought family members, distant relations, or just people who wanted to leave the modern world, and then they had children, and their children had children.

The idea of this village going on for years without the tragedies of the real world is comforting and appealing to me.

Anyways. Haven't we talked The Village to death? :p

Let's go on to Signs shall we? We haven't talked it to death yet.

There seems to be a lot animal-abuse with Shyamalan's films---the skinned animals in the village and those poor feral dogs in Signs. :(

Aye, that be true. Onward with the 6 page Signs talk! :P

Hmm, you could say that.... there was a cute lil' puppy in the Sixth Sense but he came out all right. :teehee: I think there is only animal abuse if it fits in with the story. With Signs, the animals going weird was the first sign that something was wrong.

Were they the first sign? I thought the crops were it--- and then they mentioned the wild dogs, but I may have missed the fact that the Sheriff was talking about something that happened recently but not too recently about the dogs.

Well it was the dogs barking that alerted the kids that there was something wrong, and then they saw the crop circle. And then when Mrs. Clack called the same day, she said animals all over the county were acting strange.

Whoever trained those dogs were amazing--especially the first one that tried to attack Bo. When they were giving the water to the dog and it started growl, I was extremely scared for the kid actors' lives.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think animal trainers get enough credit. My mum said that Bo really jumped and looked genuinely frightened when she was pouring the water into the dog bowl and the dog growled.

I can only imagine the riots protesting if something like an animal attack on a movie set. Thank goodness that's very rare.

Well from what I understand they only use animals that are of good temperament and that they know will perform well when trained. I'm sure the dog in Signs is a loveable, ordinary dog, who is extremely well trained. :-)
